So, as there hasn't been a post this year, here's my efforts to get into 2012!

Image

Image

Not a fan of this strut brace, I think it takes away all feeling of handling compared to when it's off, maybe I just need to learn to get used to it!

Image

Image

Image

Gave this a go at sorting!

Image

Image

Image

Not great, maybe too heavy on the paint? Applied some lacquer looks semi okay now, better than before and not going to rust!

Image

Image

Image

Way to excited, working into some nights!

Image

So that's progress sor far..

Did some research here, invested in a £25 heat gun - awesome tool, that heat proofing rubbish comes off lightening quick! Will finish that and then think about the sun roof...

The fun begins aye! I bought one of those strut braces and quickly moved it on when I managed to bend the strut top bits by hand 8O I honestly would expect something that is supposed to make a chassis rigid should be a little stiffer.

Sure it was the same brace rix313? That one looks decent from the poor pic..

The brace is an improvement to make, there is another issue as stated before.

I second rix313, that aluminium wannabe brace is just for show.

And I second Jhonno as well, don't get carried away with the brace making your driving bad. That would be a first IMHO

Like I say, can't tell from the pics what sort of brace it is.. There are many shit ones about. It looks similar to the OMP one though.

Bit more progress...

Image

Image

Will probably use some spirit cleaner tidy the remaining heat shield rubbish.

Image

Sussed out the horn wiring, will have to do some trickery with wires - I want to be able to remove it when it's at home so it and the car are less nickable! Sold my indicator stalk with the OBC loom so just waiting on the replacement as the horn goes through it 8)

I bunged my horn on the dash with a push button, can still easily reach it when strapped in the seat. Hardly perfect though, how have you done yours?

You got the sunroof sorted?

Hi Rich, actually haven't got round to it yet, like I haven't got round to answering messages.. :o: :o: work's been a bit mental so not much work on the car. Bought 5 original bbs 15" wheels with rubbish tyres on for £125 - but I'm not interested in the tyres I'll need the control tyre which is Toyo proxes 888 R15.

To be continued...

I've got a set of R888's sitting on my racking which I'm saving up for next year when I get my new plans into action.

You had a price for a cage from Rollcentre?

Yeah about the K and a half mark. There's a guy not far away in Bedfordshire I was going to by a part built car off who is part of the series, might throw some work his way re the sunroof and footwell weldking. The cage will have to wait till I have more funds :(

There's been a bit more action :D

The chap in bedfordshire did his magic, nice guy too:

Image

The car's been in the roll centre in St Ives for a cage since mid Jan - they're pretty flat out with orders by the sounds of things! But since then, I tackled some wheels I've had sitting outside unloved:

Image

There's a quick write up on how to do this http://racing.cookieonline.net/e30-320- ... -15-refurb <- there. Things ticking along! Also bought some goodridge brake hoses semi new. I'll wait for the pads and suspension bushes to arrive before tackling the whole beam removal nightmare I've been reading about!

Might give them a bell this week to see how it's going! Will post some pics when it's back for sure 8)

Some more (old) pics in the mantime...

Will be making the hole bigger and getting in some rubber grommets - wearing the bodywork through the to the live battery cable would be a definate no-no.

Finished the other two wheels. Cleaned, primed, painted, lacquered. Result! BMW dolphin metalic grey and Topaz blue.

BBS 15 Wheel cheap refurb

I've also Sourced a recommended battery, as the roll cage (which is coming on well!) goes to the front turrets - not leaving any room for a full size one.

High Level Brake Light

Also displayed is a high level brake light from sqsauto. Mandated in PBMW for this year, it should provide better warning. Also, as I say I've had a sneaky look at the roll cage.

I went up Monday and they'd got the first bar on a back turret, main hoop and everything forward of that. Can't be long now, possibly this week fingers crossed.

Nice ,

Are you leaving the battery up front, or putting it in the boot ? I am securing a small battery in the osr 1/4 (as per the 325i location).

I look forward to future updates !

Suspension will have to wait a few months dead broke now :( roll cage is finished, but VAT wasn't included in the estimate bad times...am sure it was verbally but don't have anything by email! Lesson learnt.

Battery has to stay where it is according to the series.its a bit lighter and less messing with cable so no drama 8)

Cage sorted! Here's some pictures. Hopefuly all is well! After offering me options galore including having the lateral bar in the hoop, and bar between the struts at the back (outside the cage), they put them in anyway. Ah well...

More fun this weekend!

Took out the Aerial mechanism to sell, wired in the high level light splicing into the existing brake light wiring. Loving my multimeter so damn handy, and means no cutting into the wrong wires!

Image

Also making me happy is the front lateral cage bar was moved up a touch specifically to allow me to pur the dashboard windscreen vents in. Turns out all is well!

Image

These are mandatory for the PBMW series, and it makes sense to keep windscreen blowers. I had to force each one in so will screw from the top of the dash hopefuly.

I've spent the last couple of days playing with my new favourite substance - Hammerite, as both footwells are a bit shabby and worrying too easy to rust. I've also started sealing up some bulkhead and floor holes (like where the roll cage goes to the front turrets) with plastic based filler, that's the next update!

Progress, of sorts...

Right, I was meant to have posted lots of exciting blogs, all about new aero catches, fitting the dash back together, plumbing in the extinguisher, all jolly exciting stuff. The upsetting truth is, after some recent experiences I've seriously considered if I should be carrying on with this car, so not exactly great for my optimism! I think a toddler could have done a better job of the bonnet catches, and some bits of dash I've taken out seem to have lots vital bits of plastic in their bid for freedom. Anyway, bodged heater matrix switches and badly butchered bonnets aside, this is what I have been having 'relative' success with.

Image

Tow strap and two pull handles set up, and one badly installed aerocatch. Mirrors are in the paint shop (kitchen) for painting blue with the left over paint for the wheels. Turns out I need some more so the grill is going blue too.

Image

Image

The piping so far points a nozzle at me and will then carry on through the bulkhead into the engine bay. The las bend looks a bit more severe than it is, but it has made me wonder what's an acceptable bend. The only way to know for sure is to pull the handle surely? I'd like to know all works ok, but anyway. Not sure how I'll bolt the tubing down either - I dont think I'll be putting nuts through the transmission tunnel. I'll have to ask about that one.

Image

Nothing too dramatic here. Just a horizontal dashbar that the cage fitters insisted on - even though "it's my call as it's my safety they're trying to protect". I got round the windscreen vents issue, sort of. Now the dash clocks won't fit. Bugger.

Image

Image

So, I'll be after advice on this too. Very annoying. Oh, and if anyone asks, I definately didn't drop a screw in the heater matrix, just to clear that up. Hence a lot of frustration recently. Is this normal?

Would very much appreciate top tips on the above guys, have just copied and pasted straight out the blog, happy to clarify anything if it helps. Cheers in advance.

Following on from last post, I simply screwed in the clocks where they sat :D Nice and secure.

So quite a lot of little jobs this month... May into early June anyway. Here's a summary.

Firstly the aerocatches, at about £40. I "installed" the first a while back, but was so horrified by my appalling rushed work I left just the one in for a while. I learnt how not to do things and some top tips (especially don't rush). Below is the result...

Image

This is the second catch offered up to the bonnet with the holes drilled. Reasonabley tidy (compared to the first attempt). It's a good idea to take a large drill bit to the holes just for a bit, to allow the supplied screwed to counter sink in, if that's even the right phrase! Also, I've since sprayed the body colour paint lightly over the bare metal, then a small coat of lacquer. Otherwise it rusts. With the catch test fitted first, and the horror show of my first attempt (with silly amounts of hammerite painted over) second:

Image

Image

Anyway, that's enough of that embaressment! Next some limited brake work:

Image

Frankly I was bored and I thought to free up some space the EBC green pads I bought may as well go on while I wait for the rest of the stuff. The Green compund was a mistake really, I should have gone for Yellow as they operate at a higher tempreature, but it won't make a massive difference to me in my first races I guess. Those calipers don't seem as bad as they look, but will be reconditioned as you can get the kits for them. The discs will be swapped as they are pretty poor - you can see the lip on the outside. The orange stuff you can see on the pads is copper grease spray, recommended to prevent squeaking.

And now for a bit of tidying up:

Image
Image
Image

So it's starting to look a bit more presentable. I bought some second hand fog blanks, painted them blue to go with the blue painted grill and kidneys. I've also cleaned the inside with a bit more spirits and gone over lightly with more grey spray paint, and had my first play with a rivet gun (splendid tool!) to fix the fire extinguisher piping in place.

Next job is to properly fix and route the safety pull cables. So far just the external fire ex is properly in. After that, the jobs get very expensive as I'll have to spend scary money once again for the remaining brakes parts, suspension bushes, suspension, racing tyres and transponder. The good news is though, after those bits are on, it's finished! Light at the end of the tunnel and all that...[/img]

You need to give ya self more credit mate, it's looking good! I would have recommended using the plus flush Aerocatches, I've never seen the flush ones installed without looking a bit ropey.

Cheers Rich! And yes will need a shakedown and a few laps to see what's what, as
I've never driven a car like it (will be). Plan will be Snetterton as its less than an hour away,or brands indy as I've driven it, hopefully towards the end of the year so I can get a good feel. Racing next year assuming all goes well!
