Sounds like a headlamp has been replaced at some stage, probably due to a stone chip, or some other damage.

A lot of the '88 cars had completley different lights to the rest of the E30's.
All the later cars have the smilie lights, the '88 cars have a light that when on sidelights, the whole lamp illuminates, hard to explainn really. The smilies just illiminate at the top on sidelights.
Basicially turn on the side lights when it gets dark and see if they look the same... then chose which unit to change.
It will be easier to get hold of the smilie type

Dim dip? Not just non smiley 88 cars either. I've seen quite a few E30's with dim dip, actually Steve's (325sme) touring has got smileys and dim dip.E30Mark wrote:

Dim dip was invented for people who'd forget to switch from sidelight to dipped beam when it get's darker in the night.

Cars fitted with dim dip have the normal sidelamp at the top of the headlamp which lights when you pull the light switch out to it's first position with the ignition off.
If you then switch the ignition on or start the engine, the dipped beam headlamps come on as well at greatly reduced brightness. Voltage is dropped by a couple of high wattage resistors which live right at the front of the left inner wing.
System was fitted to smiley and non smiley headlamps, but was discontinued somewhere around 1988-89.
