Heater matrix valve, a regular one unfortunately.
Take a photo or describe your coolant reservoir cap, there was a massive recall on them and if your valve has blown it's a possibility it was missed.

Can anyone suggest how to test if the boot lights are staying on with the boot shut?

pic of res cap and would i be right in saying its the part that is marked in red in my pix?
i got the car about a year and a half ago and the guy was just running water with no antifreeze and it looks pretty rusty around that area, cant see it that well but looks like a small hole in there between the white and black parts??

easy way is to take the two pipe on inlet to heater matrix and join them so that car don't over heat etc with all the air getting the system.
Does it leak with heating on and off ??

so complete vlave is knackered, best to replace with new fella ECP or GSF have them on the shelf might as well replace the heater matrix while you are there £200 sheets should have it all fixed and ready to go if you aint got the coin just remove both the pipes from the bulk head and join them just remeber you will have no heating until vlave is replaced

its fixed!, i just nipped to the breakers they had a e30 that has been compley striped and the valve part was still there lol.
so just replaced the full black pipe and valve with a secondhand one, it started to leak from the concetion so put a rubber gasket seal round it all working fine no leaks and got heating, bleed the system all good
