would this indicate a problem?

engine runs perfectly and idles perfectly however when breather hose is removed it still runs fine. my assumption was it would nearly stall and struggle to idle like it would when you remove the oil cap? or is my assumption wrong

also any tips on clearing 265,000 miles of sludge out of one :D

Does taking the oil filler cap off make any difference?

If your engine runs fine with a large air leak into the inlet system that isn't passing through the air meter, then it is running rich, either as a result of a fault, or because someone has been twiddling to counteract an air leak in the past.
For the gunge, by some cheapish oil intended for diesel engined cars, and run this for a couple of thousand miles.
