Car wont start - starter motor just clicks
Tried changing battery - no joy, starter just clicks
Tried jump-starting it from another car - no joy, starter just clicks
Tried bump-starting it with wife - no joy, couldn't get enough speed up
Called out garage mechanic
Tried jump-starting it - no joy, starter just clicks (i did tell him!)
Tried bump-starting it - no joy, couldn't get enough speed up
Tried towing - no joy, couldn't find towing eye
Tried towing eye from wife's car - no joy, wrong thread
Tried towing eye that garage mechanic went go get - no joy, wrong thread
Called out break-down truck
Tried jump-starting it - no joy, starter just clicks (i told him too!!)
Tried pushing it on to the lift at the back of his truck - no joy, iS lip too low!
Called out flat-bed truck
Tried to attach rope under car - no joy, risk of breaking iS lip
Eventually found correct towing eye after breaking one of my boot internal panels to find original tool-kit.
Car winched up on to flat-bed and taken to garage - phew!
Garage tried bypassing all wiring - no joy, starter still just clicks
Garage fitted repacement starter motor supplied by me - no joy, just whizzes round without engaging the flywheel
Garage quote Ԛ£150 for replacement starter motor (plus labour) - faint.
Pick self up off floor and phone good old GSF - Ԛ£78 + VAT off the shelf
Take to garage
Talk about cost of labour already spent - faint again.
Anyone want to buy a money pit?

Will it fit in my chariot Mr P?
Pete i can get this on monday to ease your woes mate!
Sorry to hear more bloody problems. There cannot be much left now to replace.
My new SE was giving it the ticking noise from the starter motor. A proper battery sorted it. So my guess would of been not enough power getting to it

Ah tell me about it man.....The list is never ending!
ABS lights on, central locking dont work, its leaking oil pretty bad, heater matrix just died and its got a nasty miss fire LOL.
Getting a lot of it done before chsitmas now, was thinking of selling, but nope changed me mind. Love it to much, so gunna splash the cash out and get it sorted.

Harsh Pete!
Did you know the iS lips just unclip if you pull them forwards away from the car? This makes hoisting the car up much easier.
Also, could have tried whacking the starter motor with a heavy object whilst someone is trying to turn it over. This sometimes frees up a starter motor just as it's about to fail completely.

as adam said. the i.s spoiler is easly detached.
as for the starter that was put on and just turning without engaging, thats the wrong starter for the engine. sound like a 4 pot starter.
there are 2 types. the 6 pot one has ribs on the casing around the pinion. the 4 pot one has no ribs.

Thanks for all the words of support and encouragement - one of the great things about this place (though my wife thinks it's funny for some reason!!).
AndyP - thanks for the offer of the replacement side panel - how much do you want for it? It's the one on the right hand side as you look into the boot.
Simon - that would be great if you could pick the side panel up sometime - no rush though.
Thanks to both of you for this.
I went to talk to the mechanic last night and he's convinced both motors are knackered, so i gave him the new one from GSF and he's going to fit it today. I guess it could have been an intermittant problem with the motor, in which case i'm probably best off fitting a new one.
Thanks again to everyone for your support - nice one!!

Not on mine it doesnt!! Mine's screwed, glued and rivetted on to avoid anyone thinking they can nick it off my car!! Didn't realise it would cause such issues though, but at least i know now.E30Adam wrote:Did you know the iS lips just unclip if you pull them forwards away from the car? I had tried this last time it happened with no joy.E30Adam wrote:Also, could have tried whacking the starter motor with a heavy object whilst someone is trying to turn it over. This sometimes frees up a starter motor just as it's about to fail completely.

Best place to break down is outside Halfords if you have AA cover. Chances are if Halfords have the part they will fit it for you.

Have you tried checking the supply voltage to the starter?
Had this problem with my step bros 306, tried two new starters and same problem! changed the earth strap Ԛ£2.50 and started fine after that?
