I have a euro E30 323I and it has a problem. It started a while back with the engine surging. Check with a few sights and they said idle control valve. Looked at a few pics of US cars and mine looks different. Engine is a M20 like US car, but different. Oh, I am in the NW USA.
Wednesday night I started car up from a 10 hour work day and the car barely runs, sound like car is running on 2-3 cylinders. Turned it off and looked for some signs of a problem. All Vacuum lines are attached, checked cold start, seems fine.
So, I am in need of some expert help from somebody that has delt with this before on the same car. Some say this car does not have an Idle control valve, but there seems to be something vacuum and electrical sitting under the intake and throttle body.
Am I on the right track? I attached a picture of engine bay, looks different from US cars. Please advise if you can.

Unlike federal spec turds ,euro ones don't have an idle valve but they do have a coolant temperature operated auxillary air slide (i think thats what it is called ?) . This gadget is under the inlet manifolf by the starter , it is about 10 inches long and has 4 pipes, two air ,two coolant. When cold the air slide is open , as the engine warms up the air slide closes and your revs drop.
Easy way to test, is when engine is warm try to squeeze the hose that goes up to the idle screw adjuster (just above the rocker cover ) if the revs drop it means the valve is not closing which will screw up your idle and fuel mixture and cause similar problems to what you are experiencing.
You can also test by removing and putting it into a container of boiling water or a saucepan on the cooker if the boss is not looking !.
Obviously any number of things could be causing your problem but This component used to cause much aggro with these cars when they were current so is worth checking. People often try to bodge around this problem by adjusting the idle speed and mixture settings and retarding the timing but all this acheives is a dog slow turd that pinks like crazy and guzzles fuel. Good luck.
