Brianmooore, So I need to be looking else where?

What do you suggest? Might my ignition system need an overhual? Rotor arm? Dizzy cap? Coilpack?

When was the last time your injectors were rebuilt? These are the single most important item in the fuel preparation system, and it amazes me that some of you are so reluctant to get them sorted.
You can't possibly set up everything else properly if these are out of spec!

I don't think they've ever been done, the car has 107k miles, theres no mention in the service history that they've been done either.

I'm just trying to get to the botton of the slightly rich running and slightly low idle speed. Other than that the car is functioning perfectly.

You don't get cars running right by "giving things a go". You do it by testing and then replacing faulty components with working ones.
You can't easily test injectors, but it's reasonable to assume that if they're 107,000 miles old, then they aren't performing as intended. First thing to get sorted.

I popped open the AFM and tried leaning out the ratio, needless to say it didn't have the desired affect, in fact I think it should not be touched at all as Brianmoore rightly said.!!

A click either direction on the cog made the car surge and idle poorly. I think the AFM on my car is not the problem, it in fact is functioning very well. It passes all electrical tests and the carbon strip looks fine with no deep grooves at all.

I know Brianmoore you suggest an injector overhual, but I can't take them out and get them cleaned/adjusted until 30th of march as my missus is away for half term and I need her e46 to get to work.! My turd is my daily drive.!!

I'm going to start looking at the ignition system now, tomorrow I'll inspect the distributor cap and rotor arm, clean the contacts up, see if that makes a difference. Again i'll reiterate that I don't have idle issues, rather a low but stable idle and a tad rich exhaust, MPG is around 18-19 also.

Ok quick update,
Took off the dizzy cap and rotor arm, there was some carbon build up on the contacts, I sanded this off and cleaned it all up.

MPG is now around 21-23mpg with conservative driving.!

I'm going to pull the injectors next weekend and clean them up. I need to find out what O rings I need for them. Anyone know?
