Hello again zoners. Just been chatting to one of my neighbours while i was grovveling around under the car. The guy is a mechanic and knows a fair bit about classics judging by the aston db 5 he is always tinkering with.

He seems to think I need to run lead replacement additive in my 1987 320i to stop valve seat recession.

Surely the had hardened valves seats in them at this age or an i being nieve??

Cheers in advance

The M20B20 will run on unleaded, it was designed too.....

Tell him to stick to his Astons! The seats in any BMW engine are quite happy with lead free petrol, or even LPG, which is even less lubricating.
Even BMW engines that are much earlier than yours, and were intended to be run on leaded petrol, will be absolutely fine now, as long as the seats aren't recut.

Ah cheers guys that's exactly what I thought. When I had the head off when i did the head gasket i lapped all the valves in and they seemed flaming hard.

Next time i see him ill inform him to stick to cars made by tractor gearbox manufacturers.
