Replaced the oil in my 325 the other weekend and gave the car it's first proper run this morning into work, but the engine oil light came on straight away. I had checked the oil level a good while after the change and it was 3/4 the way up the dipstick.
I vaguely remember my old Tourer did this and someone said the sensor gets stuck sometimes and it should free up again after a few runs. Is this right?
Engine oil lamp on after oil change (level ok)

Yes, I remember reading that a good soaking in petrol will free up a sticky pressure sensor. I thought the info was in the Wiki, but it seems it isn't.
Don't remember BMW ever making a Tourer though...

Which oil light?
The one on the overhead check panel?
Top the level up to the full mark on the dipstick, some level sensors seem very sensitive. If that does not work, remove the sensor(mounted on the sump upper wing under the alternator)and clean it out.
The one in the cluster?
Means no oil pressure, stop using the car until you find out why....

Sorry, should have stated it was on the check panel.
I'll try your suggestions and report back.
Thanks

The level sensor is in the top of the sump, under the alternator, and can be reached by removing the air filter/AFM assembly.
Clean the area around the sensor so that dirt doesn't fall inside the sump, unplug and unbolt the cable, remove the two nuts that secure the sensor, and lift it up and out. If the car is on level ground, the hole where the sensor fits is just above the oil level in the sump.
Let the sensor cannister drain oil from the small hole in the bottom, then fill a baked bean can (perfect size) with petrol (caution - this stuff is somewhat flammable) then dunk the sensor in the can slowly, letting it fill. After a minute or so, lift it out and let it drain into the can.
Repeat several times, changing the petrol if it gets too dirty.
