The throttle on my M40 is very light.

When I bought this 318i about 8 years ago however the throttle was very tight. I removed the cable with a view to lubricate it but I saw that the wire cable itself is sheaved in a plastic.(Mylar maybe?) ....layer and this plastic layer had frayed through so I had no choice but to replace the cable. :)

As above. Lubrication would have worked if done a few years ago, but the chances are, that by the time the problem is bad enough to cause concern, the cable itself will be worn.

Just change the cable, mine was like that and was stretching when the pedal was pressed and killing acceleration.
