Is this an M20, M50 or M52 engine?

If it's not an E30 car or E30 engine, you're better off asking for help in the M50 forum:
http://www.e30zone.net/modules.php?name ... forum&f=56
In the meantime you can read what we know about these engines:

Enter your engine into the drop down boxes here: http://www.autolib.diakom.ru/CAR/BMW/
You do realise this engine has an EWS immobiliser?

on closer inspection of your OP, I see you don't mention the age of the engine.
The ECUs for a M50Tu engine come in two flavours - same type number but one is a maroon label and the other silver. The silver has EWS, the maroon does not.

Assuming things are wired correctly, the usual reason for no spark is a failed crank position sensor.
Does the fuel pump run while cranking?

The only thing the Z3's EWS should be doing now is interrupting the signal to the starter motor.
This is easily bypassed by removing the two thickest wires from the EWS module (black/yellow and black/?) and joining them together.
Need to know if the pump works when cranking.

Doesn't prove anything. Need definite proof, either by listening to the pump with the covers off, connecting a test bulb across the pump terminals, or disconnecting the supply pipe and monitoring the fuel flow.swifty123 wrote:im sure the pump is working as i can smell petrol when its turning just need to know how to get it to spark

Only needs battery + and - of the engine loom to be connected (ring terminals), and power on the green wire in the loom plug for the engine to run.
