Has anyone had a water pump start to go and make rattling noises?

Not so much rattling but screeching and generally strange noises. I had to strip the front of my M20 down to find it. A seized pump that was kicking and screaming against turning when the engine was running.

Can rattle initially if the bearing cage has broken up and the grease has gone, but it won't last long!

Mine did that, bearing cage collapsed and was squirting water out the shaft!
Slacken the belt off and give it a wiggle, if it does, replace.
