E36 rack spacer question

Do spacers go above rack or below?

I've put mine on top of the rack...as I used the original holes for it...bit it's a bit low!

Can't be a 36 rack then? The mounting lungs are 14mm shorter than e30 ones so it'll be banging around on the subframe :s

the rack is from a e36 the donor car and dont have any knocking and its been almost a year now

So the bolts must have been tightened up until the mounts bent up to the rack?
The subframe will be a right mess if thats the case

i could b wrong but i cant remember using washers or even using the airgun in a silly way to marry them up

You would defo remember if you used washers, they are a git to line up and get the bolt through, hence why one piece spacers are used

I couldnt get my E36 in the rear holes with the spacers on top,
the pinion housing was hitting the subframe here.

I have equal thickness spacers top to bottom on my e36 rack, my car is lowered about 3/4" so it seemed to me that raising up the rack a little made some sense as it relationship to the spindles is closer to stock. I am in the middle of my swap and have not driven the car yet. What do any of you think, should I put all the spacers on top? It real easy to change now with my motor out. Thanks

Thats what I'd like to know as well! I have 6 and 4mm (I think) spacers, think I had the bigger one below.

looking at fitting the e46 rack to mine so any advice appreciated.

Anybody with an M50 sump will want the spacers above, put them below and the sump will be touching the rack

Yep I started with the spacers 1/2 and 1/2, then had to move them a few months later as there were witness marks on the sump

Thanks blue and Dan, I will probably do as you suggest, will be test fitting the motor in a week or so I will know then.

Put the motor in last night and it fits fine, I have about 2mm between the pan and the rack (with my 1/2 above and half below spacers, I also have about the same amount on my exhaust downpipe and the frame. Wondering if I should shim the motor up a little as I am worried that the mounts will settle with time and twisting force. The metal stock I have to make my shims is about 4.8mm. What does anyone think.

car was up in the air today and there was spacers, was quite pleased they was there as it goes
