Those awkward to reach rust spots are a killer :(

Don't buy another they just side track you from the job in hand I speak from experience. Just drive whatever your dailly is and unless you hit this hard I doubt it will be on the road any time soon.

Despite what you say, there is going to be a lot of welding on that car, stick with it though mate 2 door chromies are thin on the ground now.

Good luck

It's going to be alot of graft to save this one Jim.

If you do get it rot free and painted (to a high standard) it will be worth the effort in the end

Think mine has this issue at the drivers side - found it the other day :x I'm not doing it this Year though - its on the list to be sorted when the bodywork/respray is done.
Just plastered it in waxoyl for now.

Definately worth saving though its a nice car

If I had a nice dry unit with power, I would have had half of the damn thing stripped the other day when I first started, but it has to sit outside. :( If it went into my unit, it would be worse off as its damp, the roof leaks, it all made of wood and the cold loose hardcore ground wont do it much good either

Ebay's going fairy well so once the new tax year starts, i'm debating on getting a proper unit, that way I have space and time to get on with her, but it all depends! I found a good size unit the other month which is very local to me and there is on at the end of the lane which is about 1 mile away so need to enquire about that too. Also means I can get more scrap. Dont like to clutter the up the land with scrap BMW's too much. :( Main reason we have a public right of way straight through our land  So we get the odd complaint about cars

Walking through our garden and complaining they dont like it... :? Some people really are cheeky baarstoods!

Anyway, i'll be going out there shortly to pry off the rusty arch liner :( I'll post pictures laer on if I havent hung myself

Today looked fooking miserable, I was up and ready to go out to her at about 7am, didnt get out the house til about 11 as it just didnt look all that good outside.

First hole I found was 'Jet'

Image

Image

Chewed through the wood

Anyway, car...

Driver side Arch today

Image

Spotted this damp mark and suspected the same issue as the other side...

Image

Wing off...

Image

Image

Someone prior has been welding...

Image

Suspect top bit..

Image

Same as the other side just here too

Image

Valance off too now, gonna have a look at that tomorrow as a bit scabby on the inside..

Note: Cheap toolbox

Image

Inside the rail bit where the bumper outs go...

Image

Grinded away and poked around and it is all surface scabs  Top corner had no holes..

Image

Grinded it all back and treated it with the rust stuff...

Image

Then caked it with waxoyl... This is the first time i've used this other than the other day into the roof lining... Seems like it doesnt really do much?

Image

Image

Image

How long does it take for the waxoyl to actually dry? I want to underseal the whole arch but the stuff didnt seem to dry

Had a nosey at one of the shells too and inspected where my rust spot is on the chromie and its directly here

Image

Which is the screw for where the wiring loom bracket clips upto.

On the outerside there is a spot weld that runs all the way along, aswell as any pin/prong/screw thread that are on them, they seem to rot... So need to remove the dash, carpet and loom by the looks of it.

Staley_Turbo has a welder I can borrow, so thats always very good news

Just a pain in the ringpeice! Would have been great to not have to strip the car down :?

Although it probably does mean I can look at throwing the aircon matrix bit all in at the same time, I was thinking of selling it as I didnt want to have to remove the dash again but looks like im gonna have to so it would be an ideal time to get it in. I can worry about sorting it properly at a later date, aslong as the fans still work

It rained as well for a bit somwhere in that timeline :(

Image

Had a little look at the front buper too while it was off, as it had some good rust on the inside...

Image

Image

Image

The outsides are in great condition, a couple of scratches and needs new joining peices so need to find out how much they are at some point.

Image

Grinded back what I could then put some rust stuff on them

Image

Image

Not sure what to paint the insides with though now? I have some underseal which I thought about using? You can not see the insides and it will preserve them well enough, whats anyone else used for chrome bumpers?

Thats as far as I got today, gonna have a look at the valance tomorrow and paint the inside of the bumpers with something.

Gonna try and clean up the plastics tonight, they have a few surface scratches  But thought I might be able to sand them out? Anyone been successfull with that? Its only the end peices so I might replace them yet...

Jim, Waxoyl doesn't really dry out (well maybe after a couple of years), thats the idea, so it can keep seeping into gaps. I think i've read, while searching Google, that people do still paint over it with underseal, not sure that can really work though

For the inside of the bumpers, i think you just need to etch prime and then just use any old top coat and i'd following it up wit Waxoyl once it's back together.

Ahh, makes some sense then  I'll have to go pick up some black waxoyl then as clear isnt very clear

As for the bumpers, I thought that might be the case so i'll just get them coated with something tomorrow then wrap them up til they go back on.

Jim all the rust wants cutting out. If your going to paint this turd, you need it to be rot free. Otherwise your just spunking your money.

To rob a saying from Rob and Dan, "If it's brown, Its FOOKED!"

Please don't spend on making it look shiney when you know its festering. Thats mental.

Waxoil will slow it down, It will fix fook all. Them inner wings need major mig action!

I'm not saying it to be a coont mate. I know you love this chariot, If you want to save it then good on you. You need to do it properly though.
I fear its only good for frag though mate. :(

I was under the impression that all the work was just temp protection to stop it getting worse until the weldathon started! :?

As Kedge says fella, its all just rust finding at the minute and inspecting  Once Ive inspected it, I'm treating the bare metal so it doesnt get worse.

It will be chopped away once I get to that stage, just wanting to know what im up against at the moment :(

As I said earlier, im hopeing to have a proper work unit in the future so it that works out sooner than I think then I will be able to strip her down completely and cut it into small peices. At the moment though, my unit is damp and full of frag so dont want anything going in there as i'll end up standing on it or selling it

Would you not be better investing in your unit? If its yours, sat on your land, thats got to better than lining a landlords pocket?

I know why you want to save it though. Sometimes getting emosionally attached to these turds is the worst thing you can do.

If you do rid it of rust you defos need to change the Donk!

Its still rented else I would have... I did look into it but it would just cost so much :( And I dont fancy spending that much on something I cant take with me if I move so to speak.

With a new unit, it means I can get more in terms of breakers etc too so the more space I have, the more cars I can break so to speak...

And yes, I know what you mean with getting emotionally attached with the damn things :? At the end of the day, its a rusty turd and I'm well aware. :D I wanted a project so may aswell crack on with it...

As for the Donk, yes, it would be upgraded, but at a much later date, I love the b20 auto, but its crap

I'm in no rush to get it sorted straight the way so the panels and replacement bits can be source from breakers etc. Like the front trays, I 'll chop out some good ones when I get some and use them etc. I'm not paying stupid money from BMW for panels which I can cut out of others and prickstick them to this one

I can still be tight and slowly sort her out... Its just stripping her down and having all the parts in the unit I dont want to do at the moment

Light rain but very wet and damp everywhere  Perfect weather screw drivering holes through metal (When I say metal, I mean rust)

So i'm guessing we're cancelling today? :( I thought I was gonna have friends to help me cry about my car some more and so you could all snigger

Think I may be looking for a replacement chromie too, starting to swap that way. So I think i'll throw back together what I can on El Turdio and drive her until another one comes up... Then I can strip her down when I have the space at a later date, and look how bad she really is.

Like Dezzy said, getting emotionally attached to them is bad news so gonna distance myself with another chromie when one comes up. One I can strip down while the other is being used, check it over and throw it back together.

I'm still not 100% though :? I was hoping you lot would influence me more with what to do later today

That thing looked rotten from the outside though so I would dread to think what it was like inside! 8O

I did message them a few times though to try and buy it, the missus liked it, but I didnt like their greedy prices for a 4 door auto with rust  Which is a bonus as thats what the missus wants, apart from the rust part  I'd settle for a 4 door too, although a Diamond Schwarz 2 Dr would be my first choice.

Lucky you Dave... 8O I've been taking some pictures of crap I pulled off the other day ready for ebay, eating sweets and playing ps3... Rock & roll.

And yes, I need a unit sorting. I'm gonna get onto the bloke who has one at the end of my lane, unit is about the same size as what I have so I can get the turd in atleast, then there is a fenced off yard which I could get a good 5-6 cars depending on the space im allowed from it...

Just need to ring the guy  Which i'll be doing tomorrow.

Thats what I was thinking... I can store all the frag and ebay in the one at home and literally have it wall to wall if need be, and at the other one, have all the shells etc... Next door is the weigh bridge too so even better, I can drag them round there and not have to faf about getting them loaded onto the trailer then someone to take them down for me

I've been well busy today so not had a chance to do bob all with stripping the breakers or the chromie, same as tomorrow too  Then need to get some bits on ebay for the rest of the week, but hoping to have the chromie interior stripped and loom out by Sunday... :D
