i am thinking of putting bigger wheels on my 89 325 which is on original 15" at the moment bt will bigger wheels have an affect steering/drive and castor camber and will it eat tyres

You'll be Ok with 16's.

They start eating tyres when you lower the car on stupidly low springs.

16's - good.

17's - bad.

anything bigger - very bad.

What would be the ideal size tyres stick with a 205/55/16 or go for somet else

What are the advantages of going wider in the rear if any on 16".what would be the max before it starts to rub arches assuming the suspension is normal

Not 205/55 r16! You want something close to the original diameter... If you're sticking to a 7" / 7.5" rim, 205/50 will do nicely.
E30 in need of wiring loom smoke since April '11...

17's are fine with a decent wheel and correct 215/40 tyre size.. Even ran 235/40 on my old Turd.
Got cable ties? Get diffin..

I am thinking of putting a set of bbs wheels from just matz on it just waiting on a price before i pull the trigger on buying them
