Its an electrical speed sensor in the diff just like E30's have.

I see. Interesting. Well, since I have it all now and I know that it runs really nicely and there are no whines/dramas etc, I may just end up making life difficult for myself and persevere! :D

The sports leather, panels (especially the front wings) and other morsels should fetch a few quid too.....

Just out of interest, I tapped the chassis number into Real OEM and it came out with a build date of Oct 82. I checked the transmission section and it lists the external speedo drive as current on the Getrag 265 up to 1984, which is the info that I had before I bought it.

Anybody able to shed more slight on this?

Well the may '82 on cars have the diff with the electronic speed sensor.

Yes, absolutely right there. I've been kinda putting that one off to be honest! I'll let you know how the moment of truth goes over the weekend... 8O

Not so.

Manual 635CSi's up until September 1985 (plus M535i's and 735i's) had the Getrag 265 with the speedo drive gear. On E28 based 635's, there was a circular plug and a circlip to fill the hole.
2.5 and 2.8 litre stuff went to the 260 gearbox in late 1982.

Well I had my first proper poke about under the car today, and I have to say it looks like my gamble of buying it without inspecting it first has paid off! It's actually pretty sound but there are a few crusty bits to be sorted as you would expect.

I also trial fitted the 7.5x15 Alpinas that I've has knocking about for years - very happy with the way they fill the arches! :D

Well as you've guessed guys, this project hasn't got off the ground due to the fact that my Mrs has been very unwell and I've had no time to do anything with either of these, so they're on ebay now. I'd like them to go to an enthusiast who has the time to do something with them:

It would have been a real pity to rape the 635CSi!

Very true - it is a pretty decent car all round and will sail through it's next MOT without any dramas I reckon. In some ways maybe it's karma that I haven't been able to do anything with the cars due to my time not being my own. Having said that, not a sniff of interest on it yet!
