Hi Glenn,
Can you not just ''tension''
the Rod so that its unable to
flex no matter what.
Several ways of undertaking this,
all without adding much weight
or additions that can foul.
Project looking good, very Red !!!!
Regards,
The Gorilla.

yes, plenty of progress, but most of it has been building the rest of the car back up after the respray. last weekend i pretty much finished the 'non v10 stuff',DMS wrote:You can always make some sort of guidence tube around it so it can never flex enough to actually bend it.
so next weekend i'll crack on with the conversion.
i fitted the brake link rod with an outer tube (sleeve),
which i then fitted with a bracket that i mounted to the bulkhaed behind the heater box. when i pressed the brake pedal before fitting the sleeve i couldn't get the rod to flex, but i fitted the 'sleeve' just for peice of mind.
hello dan, many thanks.GermanGorilla wrote:Project looking good, very Red !!!!

Nice nice nice Glenn

little update...........
been quite busy refitting the engine etc.
i completely changed the front crossmember, as i wasn't happy enough with the position of the rack. now, the rack is almost back to its original position....well as close as i could get it. it's pretty much in a straight line with the tie-rods.

also i've fitted e46 m3 discs/brakes

both manifolds refitted, minus the cats...

also fitted modified (lengthend) steering column shaft

most of the interior refitted

happy days !

actually, i found these manifolds much easier than the s62 manifolds, as there seemed to be a little more room between the exhaust ports and the chassis rails with the s85.
plus, with the starter motor being 'inside' the vee, i didn't have that to contend with.
also, unlike the s62/m60 manifolds (two on each side), these manifolds are a one peice item, which i found much easier to work with.
saying all that though, i still picked up a little 'spanner rash' lol,.........
my right arm isn't a pretty sight to start with, but, after fitting the nearside manifold....

that was the result of an accident i had back in 1984.
i was in an open top land rover that i flipped end over end, after hitting a car that pulled out on me. when the land rover landed, upside down, the top of the windscreen landed on the palm of my hand, and then we skidded about 50 yds down the road, needless to say, there wasn't much left inside my hand. so they took tendons and ligaments from my forearm to enable me to move my fingers. then they took a flap of skin off my forearm to cover the back of my hand, and skin off my leg to cover the forearm.
it all works just fine

I was getting withdrawal symptoms !

Glenn you are mental
There is like zero room for anything in that bay, but still you;
a) manage to somehow fit stuff
b) say it's pretty easy
Glad for another update

thanks steve, chris.
updates were a little 'thin on the ground' as i was just rebuilding the car,
and most of that was just usual e30 stuff, with 1000's of threads on here
covering those things.
i'm currently working on getting the original m5 airboxes and header tank to fit,
i'll put up a couple of pics when i make some progress with them.

today i've been working on the gear linkage, though not quite finished yet. there isn't much room in there. the back of the gearbox is directly under the hole for the gearstick, so the linkages are very short.
also this week, i've been playing around with the airboxes and the header tank.
the offside airbox is bolted in-place, the neaside will be bolted down this week.
the original m5/m6 header tank can be seen just behind the nearside plenum intake, which is where i plan to mount it, hopefully if i've got enough room, but as with everything on this conversion, the clearences are minimal/tight !

but basicly i've had to remove one corner to get them to fit. i'll put a pic up once i've finished them.
It's surprising how much is fitting into the bay!

thats right barry,bss325i wrote:It's surprising how much is fitting into the bay!
although i might just mount the windscreen washer bottle somewhere else,
just to try and keep it a little neat & tidy in there
Could mount it in the boot or possibly a small one behind the bumper where the horns normally go.
This is where E46 M3's have theirs.
Where is the ABS unit going?

i've removed the abs
a small bottle behind the bumper, under the nearside airbox is where i was thinking about, as i'll probably mount the oil filter/oil cooler take-off under the offside airbox.

Nice one Glenn.
My dad was thinking of doing this conversion to his EVO II but it was to mint a car to do it.
What ECU are you using ? My dad was going to use the original ECU, also did the block go in from underneath as this was a very big job according to him.
Many thanks, good luck!

And also brakes ?
i lowered the engine in from above....but it was tight!
i dont think it will go in from underneath, as the front part of the heads are wider than the chassis rails.
i had to fit the gearbox after the engine was in the bay, but the crossmember has to be removed and the engine has to be lowered deeper into the bay, to enable the gearbox to go on. once the gearbox is mated to the engine, the whole lot can be re-lifted back onto the mountings.
i'm using e46 m3 front discs, with e36 m3 front calipers.
i'll be fitting e46 m3 rear brakes later in the year.
This is quite surprising, as even the M60 can be lifted in from underneath ( http://v8cabrio.kuvat.fi/kuvat/53_space.JPG ) and it has 90deg angle between the banks.glenn wrote:i dont think it will go in from underneath, as the front part of the heads are wider than the chassis rails.
M70 is also no prob, though it has 60deg angle and SOHC.
What is the angle between the heads in S85?
While you're using the original ECU, you need to get all the unnecessary safety stuff programmed away - right?
Anyways, keep up the good work and keep the pictures coming!
