16mpg @ 1.30L, that's very bad. Check the blue temp sensor, I suspect it's running in warm up map continuously. Does the engine get up to temp on the gauge?

Can anyone suggest how to test if the boot lights are staying on with the boot shut?

I thought there was something wrong, I will check that sensor thanks for the link. does get up to temp on the gauge but occasionally goes slightly over. It does smell like its running very rich! I dont know a great deal on engines yet so any advice would be helpfull. There is no oiler cooler fitted yet I'm still to get hold of one, should it definatly have one as I know not all have one fitted? Cheers

You can get a usable DIY multi meter on ebay for about £10 to check the blue temp sensor. If it's getting warm on the gauge and holding temp then blue sensor or its wiring are the most likely suspect.

Don't bother with the oil cooler unless you're tracking it.
