I'm thinking about getting the wife an Audi TT.
Looking at an early model (due to the price) as I don't really want to spend more than £3k.
For my own selfish reasons I'd prefer a 225 Quattro as I would be driving it as much as she does.
Are there any major known faults with these turds?

If you were closer Peter, I'd be round for a nosh right now
A mk4 golf in drag!
A lot of these turds were nicked back when they were newish so check carefully.
The 225 bhp BAM 20V engine is good but i have seen them get a bit sweaty with age.
Check for the cambelt being changed and haggle accordingly if its not been done.
Water pump has a plastic impeller but a metal one is available.
Plastic sleeves on the anti roll bars can wear causing the bush to make creaking noises.
Not bad cars and well built but a bit shit to drive imo.

As Bazza says - check the VIN against the car. Loads were stolen and ringed, often with the ID from a LHD car trundling around in Belgium.

As Barry states, be VERY SURE TO TREBLE CHECK THE VIN WITH VAG AGAINST THEIR RECORDS !!! There was some major wrongness going on with these back in the day. It usually involved registering a foreign vin to get a new ID to attach to a chawed UK car. LOTS of these were done and the cops only got a fraction of them.

My wife has the 180bhp one and it's a good car. They are well put together and the rust proofing is admirable, so any car you look at shouldnt be rusty. The only trouble spots are the ends of the roof rail strips.
Ours has been a fair bit of trouble, with vacuum issues on the engine, as well as a variety of sensor failures. We bought a low mileage 2002 car.
Additionally, when we bought it, the suspension was fairly goosed - it had broken coil springs and knackered bushings on the front axle. At 54k mileage it's possible - so if you're looking at high mileage cars (which you will at £3k) then see if suspension work has been done.
Additionally, that cracking around the ARB bushing points is terminal for the ARB (unless you find a tighter fit bushing) as it reduces the diameter and means it will no longer be held properly. Changing it is awkward as it's above the front subframe. A new standard one is about £60 from a stealer.
The good news is that there are kits available to make it less of a stodgy thing to drive. We fitted it with eibach pro-kit springs and polybushed the front axle and ARB.
We also bought a caster increase kit for the front wheels (intended for an R32) with eccentric wishbone bushings and that sharpened up the steering a hell of a lot.
Most are over-wheeled on 18" rims. Ours is on standard 16" wheels and the ride is great (albeit stiff) with the sport springs. (More comfortable and controlled than a standard car, and certainly more comfortable than a car with broken springs!)
All in all it's a good car, but we've spent a fair bit keeping it in good shape.
Oh, also, ignition coils go fairly routinely.
Also, it's not gay.
The car _I_ drive is gay.

B7's Motto. "If it's French, BURN IT!!!!!!"
Friend of mine has a X plate 225 with around 80k on the clock.
I replaced the snapped clutch pedal and damaged slave cylinder on it a couple of months ago.
Cheap tacky design pedal means its a common fault,Google it.
Also he phoned me the other day to say the Red oil light had come on while he was driving it.
Pulled over and checked level which was fine.
Restarted the car and the light stayed off as it should.
Next day on first start up the light stayed on and the engine started making a loud screaching noise(ouch lol).
Car is currently in a specialists being looked at but they have told him that oil pump failure is common(blocked strainer?).
Either way sounds costly
Ugly as f uck too!

On the up side, they are holding their value damn well. They are already listed in the classic car price lists - something the E30 took 10 years longer to achieve.
That's fairly common on these now - they must have regular oil changes or the strainer will block. It's not a bad plan to drop the sump on one of these and wash it out, as well as the strainer.eko wrote:Friend of mine has a X plate 225 with around 80k on the clock.

The plastic VAG clutch pedal is a work of art as well.
My mates was collected from the specialists today after paying the £365 bill to drop the sump and clean the strainer.
She was also greeting with a £1600 quote to replace the apperntly `siezed` turbo
£600 quid of that on a replacement turbo and the rest in labour!
Since collecting it earlier the engine sounds ok and no oil light issues but car has no power.
She has now left the car with me to pull the turbo off and replace if need be.
Anyone recommend a good place to buy a replacement or maybe even someone good and reliable to recon the original?
