Hey all,
I have this strange thing happening with my car, whenever I turn the radio on, the gearbox fault dash light begins flickering on and off and the gear box starts juddering about! (Its an auto)

It does not do this when I play music through the USB or AUX out.. only the radio..!

Mad.!!

I'm thinking a bad earth somewhere... not sure where to start looking though. Perhaps the Radio is sharing an earth point with the ECU or DME?

I've got the tools to test electrics, but mechanics are really my thing. Anyone give me some pointers where to look?

If you've an electric aerial, check in the boot and see where it's earthed. I'll bet it's in beside the control wiring for the gearbox. Give it all a good clean and redo the earths.

There is an earth under the left handside of the dash that shares earth for radio & auto box worth looking at.
I would also check behind the radio like Fowler said, often a birds nest of bodgeness behind there

Do you have an electric aerial? Does it only extend when the radio is on, but stay down when you use the aux. in?
If the answer to both of these is yes, see cecotto479's post.

Ah yes correct! Mine does have an electric ariel which is right next to the Autobox control unit in the boot! Good thinking guys I'll strip it down, clean and button it up and report back.

Thanks guys!

Ok fixed it,
Someone had disabled the electric aerial operation by disconnecting its ground point from the bodywork, previous owner wasn't a fan of the retro aerial I'm guessing. I reconnected it and now I have great reception too.!

Thanks fellas.!

Why do so many of you on here buy cars that were previously owned by idiots?

Goes with buying used cars... you have to spend some time undoing bodges people have done to them...

I once bought a used e46 in great condition for cheap, I was made up until a week later I had to slam on, then wheels locked up, it had no ABS!! They'd taken the LEDs out of the cluster to hide that fact.!! WTF?!

I got a copy of INPA and pulled it fault codes and luckily it only needed 2 wheel speed sensors... (and some new LEDs for the cluster)... I'm guessing the previous owner had taken it to a garage and had been quoted for a new ABS overhaul at some extortionate price. So he'd taken the LEDs and to get shut of the car.... IDIOT.

It worked out good in the end as I get a great car at a steal of a price, I still own it today.

Every BMW owner should have his own diagnostics setup, never rely on a garage to diagnose a problem.
