When I first moved abroad I kept mine for two years, it was garaged. It cost me a fortune, it rusted was damp and mouldy inside and each time you come back you need to MOT
, tax insure etc which takes days- thus you end up renting a car anyway. I sold it for scrap value.
My advice is sell it, put the money in a nice term account for 18months and buy a new one when you return full time.

correct it does not need insuring, but it can still be stolen, thus i would keep it insured.
my issue was i liked the car and wanted to keep it, the dream and reality are very different, you wil onyl have a short amoutn of time in UK, when you work abroad, most of which you spend visiting famliy/frends/pub etc, hire cares are cheap these days so i hire when in UK.
It is sods law that whenever you retrun back your car will need MOT/tax/etc etc so when i had my E30 i woud hire a car, then spend two-three days getting the thing through its MOT, then atx/insure etc so you get the car for a few days then toime to leave again.
plus like all things cars do not like to be sat idle, so they get damp, rust, electrics play havoc, the engine does not like ti, the battery goes flat etc etc...load of hassle.
sel ti now while its worth something, put the money away. save soem more while working abroad, buy a better one when you get back.
at the end of the day E30's are not that rare and the price will not change much over the next couple of years, or while abroad buy an e30 for your everyday car

Id leave keys with family or friends.
Stick them on insurance and make sure they look after it (emotionally black mail or pay them for the trouble)
At least then it get turned over every so often.....

Is it a very special car?
Yes? Then buy one of those inflatable heated garages and keep it in there , in the barn. Problem is they need power to run the pump and heater, and likely cost close to the value of MOST e30's.
No, it's a sport like the other thousands out there, sell it, bank the money buy another sport when you return.
Think with head not heart!!
For the record many people who move abroad for short term either hate it and return to UK within few months, or they love it and don't return to UK for a long time, if at all. I left UK in 1997 for a year or two, I have not been back.
So have you worked abroad before? Is this a specific assignment from your UK company or a new job?
My best advice is sign all the papers to sell, leave with your grandfather etc, leave the car with him in a state to sell, then go to your new job and see how you like it, after few months you will know if you like it, then you can make the descision to sell or not, plus this way you can sell in summer so better price and in no rush so wait for the money you want.

well i have been working abroad for over 6 year but still staying in the uk it was a stipulation with my last work that i had to live in the uk.
i started a new job 6 months ago and now have have decided its time to move as this new job has no stipulations where i can stay.
the sport is not realy specal but it has been a very good car to me.
the way im thinking today is i will probably try and sell it when i get back with 11 months MOT but by the time i get back and take it out for a run i will probably change my mind
