Hi there lads I have been pondering over this thought for the past two evening over my good ole cuppa with rich tea lol ”¦.

We all know that there are many E30’s out there some with boot spoilers and some without”¦.. now the question that comes to mind is:

Dose the boot spoiler on the BMW E30 318IS hold a technical performance enhancement regarding the handling of the vehicle and if so how important is this for the car and the driver?

Or

Is this just an aesthetic factor for the e30 18is.

All help is appreciated.
Kind regards

any performance difference if you removed the standard rear spoiler would be so small as to be not noticeable.

As bazar as this question sounds it was just something I had to clear up, didn’t mean to sound silly or uneducated. However I was just going through a though to take off my boot spoiler as id prefer the spoilerless look.

At the same time started to think if it would have any real technical difference to it what so ever. BMW being BMW they have always been ahead of their time im sure”¦so would have thought they would have installed this boot spoiler for greater down force and more traction to the rear end.

ROb, i'm sure that their is a good reason to adding a rear boot spoiler to the E30, more rear downforce comes to mind. :D

AFAIK the e30 was designed without the aid of a wind tunnel. It wasn't until the M3 came along that the aerodynamics were seriously investigated - hence the reprofiled rear window/bootlid.

I'd say on a standard car the airflow over the rear window and bootlid is so disrupted that the bootlid spoiler has very little, if any impact on lift.

Any aerodynamic benefits the spoiler does provide will be minimal at 70mph.
