I'm at abit of an engine dilemma for the Touring...

On one hand I have my M52 and the plans for that, have alot of these bits but not everything;

Late M52b28 from 328i auto,
BBTB,
M50 inlet manifold,
S50 injectors,
S50 exhaust manifold,
S52 cams,
Alloy rad,
S50 oil filter housing and cooler (probably use a mocal however as not confident in the b32 cooler I have)
AC-Schnitzer ECU (plus another to get re-mapped to mods),
AC-Schnitzer 328 rear section,
E46 M3 6 speed gearbox
TTV lightweight S50 flywheel & probably use ACT E46 M3 solid disc clutch
40% fully rebuilt 3.46 LSD

Have all the service parts like waterpump, stat, filters, gaskets, seals for pretty much the whole engine

More than likely do an ARP head-stud conversion and use a cometic MLS gasket before it goes in as also will make it easier to match the exhaust ports to the S50 fannymold

Might use a WAR chip after a while rather than re-map my spare ECU too as might be able to optimize it better and have switchable maps

Then on the other hand... I've been offered an M47b20 from an '05 E90 320d

All the needed bits come with that obviously;
Engine,
6 speed box,
loom,
ECU,
EWS,
keys.

would be using a TTV flywheel on that too rather than the dual-mass if I did use it.

Use pretty much the same diff but a 2.56-2.93 cwp depending on how the gearing fairs out.

Get the diesel remapped then I suppose.

As for the car, Its a malachite green 318i Touring to start with.
Will be fully tec 2 kitted once finished on the outside,
Fully rebuilt running gear (powder-coated and re-inforced bits, adjustable rear camber and toe, BC coilovers, all new Lemforder/meyle bushes)
refurbed BBS RMs,
Full Sport Touring beige leather interior
And a few other tasty morsels here and there of course.

I can't decide what to do with it... the M52 is there and has almost everything there for it but still abit of work to do on it to get it the way I want it.
When done it would be pretty f%$king epic and with the gearing still pretty good on fuel as a daily driver especially if I do a granny driving tune on the WAR chip.

Then I could go with the M47 and make it a total miser altogether.
OK, I'd be losing out on outright performance but its not like I don't have any other E30s to fufill the need for that :P

I'd kind of prefer an N47 to be honest though and its what I was planning on doing once I had the M52 done and then sold once I had the replacement sourced... maybe find a bent 123d somewhere!

I have a 320d E46 as daily hack and it's really good.
you can drive it like a loonie and still get 45mpg out of it.
And low end punch is much better than a NA petrol.
Get it remapped and it will fly.

but you sure you get this engine running in a non E46 chassis?

There's an M54b30 running in an E36 chassis anyway so not really a bridge too far to get an oil burner going in an E30 now.

The biggest difference between my E30 & 46 is that I actually enjoy driving the E30, to spoil it with a diesel lump just doesn't make sense, if you want a sensible car then get an E46 320d touring.

Fitting an M52 with all those bits must be heading towards 240+ bhp, now that's an enoyable car!

Can anyone suggest how to test if the boot lights are staying on with the boot shut?

Yeah, I reckon 250 or even abit more shouldn't be totally unrealistic...

I know it'll be very enjoyable with the M52... but so too is an E30 with 360bhp so I'm sure I'd live with spoiling the Touring with a decent oil burner

I think there's more too it than just the engine making an E30 more enjoyable than an E46 too though.
If I get an E46, it won't be a diesel anyway!!! It'll be a case of if... or more so when... an M3 (CSL if I can manage it) and a shitty jeep for work :P

Hey if you get the oil burner running in an malachite green touring with tech 2 kit.... Give me a message as to what you would consider selling it for!
