Hi folks!

since the touring has been back on the road I've been doing some assessment of the fuel consumption, and the effect my driving style has on it

Bearing in mind that my car is an m20b20 (flathead guzzler) touring (extra weight) and has a 4.27 (i think !) diff (80mph=4k in 5th  )

If I drive very carefully, shifting up at 2500rpm (or whenever the needle sinks to 15mpg) i've been getting

170 miles to Ԛ£20 (@87.9=22.75l=5.01 gal)

giving me 33.93 mpg

If I totally Rag it everywhere- ie never out of fourth max, and WOT anytime I need to move

i get 115 miles to Ԛ£20 (@87.9=22.75l=5.01 gal)

giving me 22.95 mpg

I think this is bloody good as my little bro's 1.3 skoda gives 40mpg on a run and 26 if hammering it 8O (and i know what he'd rather drive

also I think my thermostat may be jammed, a the car doesnt seem to be heating right up... so there may be more economy to come :D [/b]

Yeah!! Well so far, i think mines at about 25mpg, but i didn't have a thermostat!! Got one in now, car warms up almost straight away, and the heater is hotter!!! So now have to top her up, drive and work out how many litres it guzzles!!!

hiya! i get around 30mpg (60-65 on a tenner) if im pretty much REALLY nice to her, but have one or 2 quarter mile attacks at some plonker in a mondeo or something. i am VERY happy with this, as i have never owned a car that did much more than this, and for a 325 its not bad at all. if im nasty Ԛ£10 will see around 45miles!

Used to get roughly 29mpg iirc around town in the 325i, and upto 35mpg on the motorway.

I still maintain that mpg figures are vastly affected by how close you drive to the guy in front.

If you never (or at least rarely) need to stop, then engine's never wasting fuel :)

33.93 was mainly town driving-approx 40 miles was motorway/dual carriage way

very true! I find that conserving momentum is the best plan for getting decent mpg out of the m20 -the less braking and accelerating you do, the less fuel is wasted

I just managed 100 miles for half a tank. But it takes about Ԛ£40 to fill up ( odd.. I thought all tourings had the larger fuel tank??)

ouch on the 100 for 1/2 tank

as for the tourings having the 62 l tank-did you run it til the light was on?

It generally kicks in as the needle passes the letter R, and means you still have a gallon(ish) left, meaning that there is only space in the tank for 56-57 litres....

Im getting 100 miles for just over 1/2 tank too . Must admit most of my driving is with the engine cold ( needle just out of blue at best ) , so there probably lays my problem . I work 2.5 miles from home and its all uphill .
Got a trip back to Leeds for Christmas though so will work out true MPG then . Does anyone know the tank capacity for a Sport . I reckon 50-55 .

no I didn't run it past the R. Thought it was sposed to come on before I got to there. Means I should be able to get a few more miles. I've just filled up a tank, the first tank with a thermostat, so should be able to sort out what sort of mileage i should be getting.
