Oh fair play!

Guess two or three bags of the loose stuff should do me.

My guess would be that packing the box loosely will make it louder, anyone know for sure?

Alas, I'm going to Amsterdam next weekend so won't be able to do anything for a fortnight now

Another quick update from ma, had a few hours mapping yesterday with Ant, put in a hour or two on his and a few on mine.

Have irradicated all traces of pinking now, installed a std chip too, which did help. Smoothed of most of the rough areas and for the first time ever, I took it to 7K revs!! :D

After a good few runs with no issues @ 7 psi, yes, you guessed, I upped it, now running a solid 10psi, no pinking, all good :D

Also persuaded Ant to add a turn on his too, so he must at 6 or 7 psi now.

We noticed big diffs in our setups, performance wise, spool time and overall driveability, seems we've both got gains and losses from our systems, lots more info going into the melting pot.

Was a excellent day allround, although fuel bill is now catching up with me........

Alex, WOW mate, awesome, fancy making me an exhaust now???

Lennie, that is one big sexy pulley dude, any ideas on the eventuall boost?

Mark.

Mark im aiming for 10psi with water injection
My maths not that good but from a peice of string around the outside of the pulley
i will be getting an extra 1 and a half turns on the charger add the extra contact aria of the longer belt and it might pull 8-10 we wil see winkeye

Looks like febi make real good rocker shafts!!! after the coil of swarf incident
Image
I was :x when i found that the keyway in the end was in the wrong place 8O :?
Mesured it! it was 3mm out meaning that the eccentrics was only just sitting on top of the valves.

Lucky i didnt chip the valvestems

Mental note DO NOT BUY CHEEP PARTS!!!

Ooh nice, where'd that emerge from?!

Ordered that silencer wadding and a load of hose clips from them. What a miserable git on the phone! Would it hurt to at least pretend you enjoy your job and want to help your customers!?

Thought the rocker shafts were supposed to be pressurised? Or did ya put the caps back in again? :)

I've always wondered how they make absolutely sure there's no swarf left in engine bits. The answer would seem to be that they don't :(

Ive fitted the bigger pulley instant 7psi but i forgot to retension the belt after starting it!
So off i went happy as @7psi then the oh to familiar slapping sound of the belt stripping its self down to one rib   turning the fan belt upside down on its way
Never mind no damage just ANOTHER BELT :x and a little skin off the knuckles
Ordered new one will have it this afternoon :D

Sweeeeet! Did the belt turn up in the end?

We're gonna have to have an FI shootout at some point

All my mates have abandoned me tonight so I'm gonna make up the oil cooler brackets, then it's the final fit and fettle of the exhaust system tomorrow plus the gauges and air pressure takeoffs and finally the accelerator cable bracket :D

Its close then Alex !!

Good effort on the Pulley Len, what now if you get used to the new boost level ? custom underdrive pulley on the water pump ?? smaller 'charger pulley.

I have sorted my leaky dump valve out, midrange pull much improved 8) quieter now too, less obviously boosted

Got the belt :D and striped it allready!
Think the upper brackett needs tightening up some how.
Image
Think its jumping between gears from the little bit of play between the round and the square bars!
perhaps a flat steel bar welded to a peice of pipe with a nylon bush in it instead of the rose joint?

I have to get this sorted theres no way im spending another Ԛ£250 on belts

But it will be worth it! you should hear it winkeye now it sounds supercharged!

Well, here it is, along with new bracket for the oil filter, oil take-off plate and also the oil take-off for the gauges and turbos.

Had my mate spend most of the afternoon fettling the front exhaust manifold and make some manifold pressure take-off bits :)

Getting there.....as ever!

EDIT> oops, forgot the piccy!

Who the hell's ever heard of such crazy threads! Nothing's ever simple

Sounds just like the stupid muppet who designed the oil pressure switch, wern't they thinking of turbos back then. :D Best thing to do is get someone with a good tap and die set and they should have both those sizes in it. Then jobs a good un.

Good luck with the run Len, we gonna see you at Lakesdide next week M8 ?

Had some thoughts on your belt issues, can you add a spring to preload the tension strut and negate most of the flex ??

Other thoughts are using a merc aux belt damper unit , possibly achieve the same result?

Alex, its real real close now then dude

I just ordered the VR conditioner parts I need for spark control, be nice to be rid of the Moronic for good

So what is it that causes the belts to strip?

Latest from me:

oil cooler and associated gubbins

my heath-robinson (but successful) attempt at maching the exhuast manifold flanges flat

manifold 1 all nice and flat

and the pair of them :)

all the various odds and sods I've been making as pressure, vacuum, water and oil connections

and the engine bay as I left it tonight.

Gonna have to squeeze a chassis rail to clear the front turbo now though as it only has about 1/2mm of clearance :o

Well when i go to change gear it gives a loud squeek as the charger turns off.
So i asumed that the belt needed re-tensioning so i set about that before the second run.
As soon as i gave it some boot, changed gear it screached :?
so i pulled over to inspect it the front rib had turned inside out 8O :?
Cut that off with a stanley went on my way got nearly 20 more miles on 5 ribs then it turned inside out :?

Alex its amazing whats possible with a lathe :D do you find yourself trying to find things to make on it too?
Looking good :D so whens the big day?

Mmmm, couldn't connect a switch to the clutch on the charger so that as soon as the clutch is pressed it disengages could ya?

Not sure if I've got it right with the clutch being on your charger?

I've no idea when my first drive's gonna be :(

Tried to buy some pipe to plug the dump valve holes in the cossie ICs I have, but CAFCO didn't have any and nor did Halfords :(

Plan for the next couple of days is to avoid frost bite, get the down pipes to fit and finally take the TBs off so that they can be syncronised properly as one opens miles more than the others!

Alex you need quite a bit of lateral clearance between engine bits and non-engine bits, the engine can move a long way sideways on the rubber mounts (unless you have stiffer ones?)

Andy335 and I have both found that what looks like a decent clearance at idle can turn into quite a lot of vibration and rattling when you turn into a corner :x

Bugger.

Might have to make up some straps that pull the engine 1/4" to the passenger side and also stop the engine from moving side to side after that :)

might be able to 'jump' the engine a little to the left by putting the rubber mounts in different holes in the subframe crossmember. that's what I did. i don't know which holes the standard m20 comes on from new, but there's a round hole and a slotted hole and i guess one's for the stud and one's for the peg. lots of potential for playing around with it.

you can twist them to suit yes, but I prefer to shim them upward to gain better clearance fellas, mine sits a few degrees higher than stock on the OS to gain a bit more room below my snail

had to pick the bloody kit up from the depot this morning, parcelforce are useless $%Ԛ£*'s :x

sensibly decided to buy a new 18w soldering iron, as my old one gets used as a screwdriver and a mini crowbar and was a bit powerful.

haven't started putting it together yet, that's later!

been trial fitting manifolds just now...

thinking i'll use those two rear-manifolds and side mount the turbo quite near the front one's exit. if i cut down the outlet of the rear one and put a little bend there i think i'll have sparkplug access 8)

won't be equal runs to the turbo though :?

on the plus side there's loads of room for the downpipe :D

Looks sweet Toby !

you could place the turbo where the washer bottle would sit, be almost equal length there then M8, even more room for a downpipe of obcene dimentions too

whats the port relationship like with the manis 180' ? M20 are 2/3rds and need a lot of modding to get close.
