Had a problem on the missus 06 MK3 TDCI Mondeo since i bought it, at first it was only when it was cold and has gradually got worse over the last 6 month going from only knocking when cold to knocking when its been stud, then being ok for the rest of the journey to now knocking every now and again throughout the journey and can be made to knock nearly on demand.
the knock happens just off centre when turning left or right and can be prevoked to do it louder and harder by rocking the steering past the point when it normaly does it.
I've turned the wheel through 90degrees amd 180 degrees and tried to provoke it to make the noise but it doesn't do it. however if i turn it back to the centre and then rock it again it will make the noise.
I have done the following to trace the noise to the PAS side by the below
Disconnect the steering coloun from the rack - no noise
Disconnect track rods from struts - no noise
re connect drivers side strut - no noise
reconnect PAS side strut - Knocking noise
Over the last 2 months i have changed/checked the below
Greased all column UJ's
New full recon rack
New top mounts x2
New top mount bearings x2
New track rods x2
New track rod ends x2
New springs x2
New lower wish bone PAS side
Checked ARB drop links no obvious play
Non of the above has changed the tone, volume or timing of the noise.
Only thing i can think of is the last thing not changed which is the drive shaft. With the wheel and track rod off turning the strut by hand the CV joint does feel alittle like it has a click but not like the one i feel.
This is the noise i get

not quite so loud as the camera makes out but still quite loud and you can feel it. its more when stud still and the car has been stud but you can very slightly feel it when the car is driving but with no noise, when its stud still it feels like your making somthing move past a step and when your driving its more like a resitance change.
Does this look/sound like a fooked drive shaft?? how could i check?
Any help would be appreicated as it doing my head in now!!
Thanks Matt

Forgot to say the car is on 118k and nearly all of it is motorway driveing as it used to be a pool car from my work
Don't know if it makes a differance, could the CV joint have worn in a streight ahead position hence the knock as it moves off the worn groove?
The PAS side is the shorter of the drive shafts to.

You should never underestimate the predictability of stupidity
