I've noticed that the gearbox is quite noisey in 2nd and 4th gears, but a lot quieter in 1,3 & 5th. It is occasionally a bit notchey/graunchey going into 3rd on a downchange.

So I have my suspiciouns about the health of the gearbox. I might change it in the future. So....
-is the gearbox unique to the 318iS or is the same box as the std 316/318?
-what code or part number does the box have?
-changing it, what's that going to be like? I've had the prop shaft off without too much hassle, but getting to the two highester bell housing-block bolts looks problematic. Does the engine need tipping down to get to them? Is taking the whole lot out of the bottom of the car the easiest way?

according to the etk the transmission its an S5-16.
It's a getrag 240. I think the 318i and 316i M40 boxes physcially fit, but some have different ratios etc. you can find specific part nos. for them all on realoem.com to be sure, but would have thought you'd be best off just getting a 318is box.

If you change the gearbox, double check the lay-shaft diameter on the new box, the spigot bearings/ lay-shafts changed in Sept 90.

If the lay-shaft is a different diameter, then you will need to remove and replace the spigot bearing in the end of the crank shaft, not too hard to do, and the bearing is about Ԛ£3 from the dealer i seem to remember.

I'm sure the 318i / 318is boxes are the same, but run different oil internally? i think the 318iS box has different oil seals too.... could be talking rubbish, but i seem to remember a topic about this a long time ago.

im breaking a 316i '89 and i wanted to know if the gearbox would fit my 318iS. I work for BMW, so i asked the parts manager to research my querie and he assure's me that the gearbox for the 316i, 318i and 318iS are all the same after late '89 (september 1989 build date). they have the same part number, therefore they are the same 'box

i am gonna use the 316i's gearbox as mine is doing the same as yours, so i will let you know how i get on once its fitted.

once my box is out im gonna strip it down and rebuild it. but does anyone know if the insides of a 325iSPORT short ratio 'box will fit inside this 'box? and if the shafts fit, does/will it have any advantages???

brianmoore, maybe you would know???

The bell housing and gear ratios are the same, but the input/output shafts are different and so is the propshaft,

So it will bolt up, but then isses with the prop and output flanges are not worth the hastle, when i got a nice clean 40k only gearbox in my garage winkeye

Thanks for the info everyone.

I might change the box, but it will be after Christmas if I do.
