Just made my m40 318i soo much smoother and quicker by:

Injectors cleaned by injectortune
Cleaned THOROUGHLY the intake manifold
Replaced a few intake pipes
Good service (sparks,oil, filters.. Ect.)
Replaced dizzy cap
Replaced accelerator cable (makes acceleration so much smoother)
And got the maf tuned for freeeee

All in all it cost me around £150, but spending that on ricer mods could be worse :D Now it's quiet, smooth and ALOT faster before I could hardly reach 100mph, now it takes hardly any effort at all. Love to see someone else do it and put it on a dyno before and after.

Wrote this for people who are thinking of buying fuel magnets and K&N filters.

Don't these have an AFM, and not a MAF?

How did they go about 'tuning' it, exactly?

Yeah AFM sorry, they hooked it up to a gas analyser and used the mixture screw until it read something like 1%.

Most people look over how much they can benefit from a good service!

The putting the gas analyser up it's rear end and fiddling with its bits? :D well I dont know what the analyser said but when I peeked at its monitor thing it said something with 1%. Don't understand that contrapment.

I meant twiddling the "mixture" screw.

I'm fairly positive it is factory set and not designed to be used.

I may also be thinking about something completely different and be totally wrong :D

Factory set but you can bet your bottom dollar some have been played with. I've certainly done it in the past with a spare AFM while looking into a kangarooing problem, but just as it was a spare not doing a lot.

Someone twiddled the mixture screw for an air leak.

But for other people, you never know what your mixture could be unless it's pinking or smells rich, but I found out talking to the guy who works on Mercedes & BMW's and says over time due to something I forgot can leave its factory setting slightly and just checking every 5 years or so on a gas analyser can tell if it's running right.

replacing inlet pipes that probably had cracks and/or holes would have sorted problems out anyway

service and dizzy cap will improve the running too

unless the cable was freyed or rusted wouldnt make u go faster,

injector cleaning is always a good thing,

how did you clean the manifold?

i cant remember what the % is but 1% seems low , you dont want to run lean
if there wern't people like me,
with cars like mine,
who would you put down to make yourself feel better?

It is the common thought that the problem lies elsewhere and by adjusting the screw just masks the actual problem.
What about the inverse though? In 20 odd years the screw has been dicked about with and the root cause has actually been fixed at some point?

Yeah I found my accelerator was stretched and frayed.

I cleaned my manifold firstly by spraying about 2 cans of carb and choke cleaner and dragging a rag through it every time of spray this got big bits of it out, then left it for a night in some paraffin dryed it out properly, then chucked it in the old dishwasher put in some powder and put it on high heat water. Came out spotless inside then just got a wire brush on the outside and painted in aliminium coloured spray paint.

1% maximum CO, according to this:

http://www.e30.eu/tech/E30ManualHaynescomplete.pdf

So, it sounds as though your AFM has indeed been adjusted correctly. :)

I seriously couldn't, foot down and everything. all sorted now though, need to find out top speed.
Petrol light is on now, I'll put £20 tonight and find out with normal driving when the light comes on.

Always nice when you have an engine running as it should :D

just got a set of refurbished injectors to go into mine.

Inlet manifold gaskets and a good soak of carb cleaner in icv, throttle body and afm next :)
