shreeking noise?.... "was the fookin water pump after a

I've noticed that if i hold revs at any point my engine is shreekin or howling for want of a better word.... I put this down to the water pump bearing maybey and have a spare metal item at the ready. I have no issue with temp what so ever.!

Its coming from the front somewhere and to me earlier sounds more toward the top, the noise is getting worse, its from cold start up and all the while she's warming up the noise is present. Once warm and driving it seems to go away or atleast quieten down considerably to the point where its either not there or quiet enough for me not to hear it.

I'm starting to think it may not be the water pump but the bloody vanos unit that's shreeking. Is this how they behave when the seals are totaly fubar'd.??

Any help here appreciated as I will be doing both the pump and seal as soon as I move into my new property and have somewhere to do it

It's not one of the tensioner/idler bearings is it?

Have you done the sounding test with a big stick or screwdriver?

I did the above test all along the side of the head from back to the front, it was fine and no change in sound.

Put it on the vanos unit and the noise was there! I'm thinking its that now to be honest

It was the bloody water pump after all..!

It went this morning in such a fashion that the shaft was loose and the impellar was wedged in the opening

This was a bmw stamped metal impellar pump. Luckily I had a spare from my m50 and wasn't far from home when it went.

Exactly mate, I'm still convinced the vanos seal needs doing but it was the pump that was culprit of the terrible noise lol
