does anyone know the advantage/disadvantage of fitting a 525e diff to my 318is?

Reason i ask is i have just been offered the full car cheap, and my mate who has a 520i is trying to blag the diff!

Any ideas?
or have you done it? :)

As far as I know-the 525e diff will probably be a "big case" diff with ratio of either 2.97 or 3.05 ish..

Your IS is fitted with a 4.10 (small case) diff as standard, so if changed to a big case you'd need to shorten the propshaft (not a difficult job!)

The big case weighs more, but is more reliable.

however, either a 2.97 or 3.05 will probably be too long for you to use in your IS.

Basically, Accelleration will be reduced (as 525e diff is "longer") but top speed will be higher.

Your m42 high revving 16v probably wont like that diff at all.

hope this helps

Eko dont do it ul slow the car stupidly, ul inrease economy but thats it

u ideally need a 4.10 LSD (rare and expensive)

or a mid 4.20s LSD of a 318i lux, also rare

some people use 3.91 of tec 2 sport but apparently u can feel acceleration difference!
