M20 sump baffle

Is this posiible? If so where do you get them from? How much do they cost?

Also what's the pro's & con's? (There's allways at leat 1 or 2).
Just wondering after seeing kits for the likes of the S5x etc.

not quite a baffle but close,

the oil climbs the bmw block on long left handers which can cause oil starvation issues, really only seen on track but it all depends how hard its driven.

the m20 scrapers from there will cut windage and oil loss in the m20 and have a trap door to help prevent the climbing, for a road car that should be all you need.

you can get baffles welded into the sump but for a road car there shouldnt be much need.

im pretty sure those scrapers are the same ones that other bmw places are selling with a mark up.

you could get one made from sheet steel using an old sump gasket or sump as a template, but at under £100 its not worth the hassle.

Well after a fair bit of digging I've found out that baffles are available from Ireland engineering aswell as those crank scrapers.

so hopefully in a week or so I'll be ordering both of them & then trying to decide which to use lol.

if I do decide to use the baffle, how hard are they to fit?
if I had a garage do it what would a rough estimate of fitting be?

I get fuel starvation in the iS fairly frequently, it's bloody inconvenient. is oil starvation an M42 issue?

i don't know, i would assume any slant 6 will be worse in 1 direction than the other and the more canted the worse it would be.

So does anybody know how hard it would be to fit a baffle in an M20 sump??

I don't want to be ordering one to fit myself if it's going to take me 3 week's, 6 days & a breakfast to fit it.

Not if the engine is in situ, its not.

Fine if its on an engine stand.

Yes good point. If the engine is in place its not quite so easy, the simplest way then would be to drop the cross member and do it that way.
Im sure the sump change procedure is in the wiki so follow that and add the crank scraped that way.

If its for a stroker then its not something i would suggest trying in place as the scrape may need modifying.

Well time to dig up an old thread,

In the next month or so I'll hopefully be ordering one of these scrapers from is Motorsport & I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to drop the front cross member to get the sump off with the engine in place??

I have fitted one of these scrapers for my m20 2.8 while the engine was on the stand. Bloody time consuming because you have to have 1mm clearance between the crank and the scraper in any location, so its a matter of trial fitting, getting a 1mm feeler gauge, rotating the crank and marking where the scraper is too close, removing the scraper and grinding the areas that are too close, cleaning the scraper off and refitting and start again....

I have not tracked the car yet and I don't have an oil pressure gauge but I would like to think that the common oil starvation issues on the track around left hand turns is sorted with this mod.

You could always run half a litre more oil in the sump when you track the car to avoid having to do this mod or fit a sump baffle, I have heard that works....

well after countless set backs, hours (days?) of procrastination i've finally got off my arse & ordered one of the windage trays/crank scrapers from the site hairyscreech linked to,

got a teflon lined one for my H27 lump winging it's way for the land of the strange, shouls be here in just over a week.

means i've got to take the sump off again (already got a baffle extension plate fitted (supplied by maxfield) so they should work well together.

maybe this time i'll get some pics taken of it fitted in place,

just hoping for a few dry days when it gets here.
