Hi folks,

I sell SpeedView Daylight visible Head up Displays (HUDs).

These little gadgets project your speed onto the windscreen so that you can see your speed and see where you’re going at the same time. £69.99 retail; £60 to E30zone members, £40 to the first two people that take some photos and write a quick "how to" guide for the speedview.co forum.

Have two photos and a video:

Just three wires to make it work - earth, ignition live 12V, and vehicle speed signal.

More installation info here:

Drop me a line at forums@speedview.co if you'd like to be a test pilot and snap the photos for the 'How To' (I'm after two volunteers at the moment) :D

Do you need to cut the dash to install it?

That is pretty funky.. I like it! Would be nice addition to my 328i Touring

it doesnt look like you have to cut the dash, looks like you use sticky pads to hold the unit in place, and have some sort of semi transparent but reflective sticker on the window

Hello!

Entirely up to you!

I supply 3M Velcro with 300LSE adhesive compound - maximum sticky low surface energy plastics flavour. It is pressure sensitive, so it'll slide around the dash a little but once pressed down that's it, stuck. Peel it off and it won't re-fasten again ever. Works best >20C. The harder it is pressed down, the more it sticks.

Usually you can tuck the wire between windscreen and the dash, or dash and the A-pillar to get behind the dash. Flat section, and less than 3 mm thick. I put a hole through my dash because the MX5 ones sell for about 10 pence (only part of the car that doesnt' rust) and take 30 minutes to swap!

If you're more patient than I am, spaceboard insulation foam from B&Q can be cut/carved with a knife then wrapped with vinyl/alcantara to make a dead neat little pod for dash mounting things. Allsorts of potential there.

You could also flush fit it by sandwiching the dash at the split line. Not designed for this but can look good if you've a flat enough surface. Detail here:

The film is a one-way tint to prevent ghosting and improve contrast. Its a tint rather than opaque, so is exempt from the MOT restrictions on positioning. (5% transmission one-way mirror tint if you're curious, and no need to keep it that size or shape - I supply large so that instructors and trackday cameras can see from passenger seat)

Cheers,

Hi all,

Thought I'd share an install on an E39 M5; turned out to be none too tricky in the grand scheme of things:

Any interest in an E30 install?

Yes. It isn't a simple switch - it'll take 30 seconds or so - but there's plenty of time on the ferry for that. :)

Can these units easily be dismantled so you could build it into the dash?

Can it do anything else other than show speed?
