Is my 325i diff LSD
Moderator: martauto
hi all i checked the tag on my diff and it read 364 4062 ive checked all over the net and the only car that had a 364 ratio was the 318is my bm only used to do 52 in second and all ways leave 11's do you know if they made a 364 open diff? and why would my 25i have one they are ment to have 410 i think can anyone help as i want to sell it and make sure someones getting the right diff, im going to spin the wheel trick tomorrow.
i think you right mate just read the diff wikki i still think its a rear diff mind as i cant find many other 325i with one it did used to go off the clock on track days with its super chip in so the rev limiter came in at 7200 instead of 5600 think i might take the back plate off tomorrow to settle my couirousity as convinced its lsd from the way it used to drive.

Go to the nearest empty space, when no ones looking put the steering wheel on full lock, rev the engine hard dump the clutch , if it does a doughnut easily it got a LSD if it spins the outer rear wheel it hasnt.
Easier done and less stress on drivetrain when its wet, Oh and do it on private land or dont get caught

The way to tell is a diff is a lsd is if the ID plate's gearing is stated as S3,64:1. Also if the original paint is intact there will be a big white S drawn across the top of diff casing.
Some people say you can also tell by turning one wheel when in neutral and the rear wheels being in up in the air. If the other wheel turns the same way as the other driving the gearbox output shaft it should be a LSD. But I'm getting a bit sceptic about this method. It will work on a LSD, but it might also do it on a open diff if there is little resistance.

Why is there not enough time to do it right, but allways enough time to fix the errors - I borrowed that, just so reallistic in my line of work.

Some early sports had the 3.64 fitted with the CR gearbox.
Easiest way to check if it's a slipper is to jack up the rear of the car, turn 1 wheel and see if the other turns the same way.
If it does,then it's a slipper.
If the other wheel moves in the opposite direction then it's an open diff.

it seems most 325i have 373 ratios unless auto then 410 even the e36 uses a 364 ratio and ive also read its a good size to use on track day cars so wondered if its rearer than more more comon sized 373 one. there is one on ebay off an auto which ive heard had a viscous lsd as standard.
