Basically the penny dropped today that the new four pot turbo petrol engine used in the 116i and 118i is an N13 which is basically a tweeked N12 engine from a Mini cooper s.

Yep! I pdi'd a 116i last week, opened the bonnet and found a mini (dam french) engine. Zaust manifold to the passenger side of the car, got to be the first iv seen on any BMW. Correct me if im wrong tho.bss325i wrote:Basically the penny dropped today that the new four pot turbo petrol engine used in the 116i and 118i is an N13 which is basically a tweeked N12 engine from a Mini cooper s.

A little rev and it sounded ok, the turbo was pretty loud.
On the bright side, when the timing coughs up, it will be abit easier to sort as the timing chain is facing forward opposed to being down the side
Still unhappy they dropped the silky 6pot!

TBH i've payed little attention to these new turds coming though as i don't really get involved with PDI's and AUC as we have two dedicated techs for that but i was having a nose under the bonnet of an F20 118i today and noticed the water pump friction wheel then the penny dropped.Ajsingh wrote:Yep! Yes, if/when the timing chains start f*cking about like the Mini N12 engines then it will be easier due to access.
I've got an Mini N12 timing chain down to just over 3h now!

the good thing is that they will make money and they will be good cars, another positive thing is that they are still making odd ball cars like the e46 m3 CSL, e92 GTS, e90 320si, 1M coupe etc
BMW need to pay for DTM racing some how and M branding is the way to go. the people choice of car is no longer a mondeo or vectra but a bmw 3 series, the executives still want the 5's and most of the chauffeur cars i see at heathrow are new sevens ( apart from addisson lee people carriers )
if the brands going to still appeal people, they will want something a bit different hence all the M sport models, and now the M badge is going be used on dervs
while some of us do not like it , it makes sense.
bmw is 20 times the car manufacturer it was when e30's first came to the show rooms and that because they make great cars and great marketing. they need to move forward. as long as they keep making parts for the e30's who cares. i doubt that are many of us are in a position to go spend 50/60/70 large on new range topping bmw but we will happily buy them when they are cheap enough and they'll be good enough. actually they will still be very good

Oh those techs get all the cream lol. We seem to run out of work sometimes so PDI and AUC's are whats left.
On the 116i i lifted up the plastic engine cover and was like "oh no"

The diesel M cars look pretty impressive, shame about this though;
Initial reports BMW would be offering a rear-wheel-drive version of the mighty-sounding 550d appear hasty: a BMW UK source has told us that the 550d will not be appearing on the UK market in any form.

The alliance between all the OEM's nowadays is more interbred than a Norfolk women's rugby team.
One of our Ford diesel engines are used in Peugeot/Citreon/VW, our 1.8L/2.0L petrol engines are used in Ford/mazda/Volvo/Jaguar/Landrover/VW and Ford now have joint programs with GM/Nissan you name it.
My mate is head of the R&D on the head unit and communications on the Porsche 918 Spyder. It's basically a Ford head unit used in Jaguars.
