Fancy an e28 once the compact goes, ideally a 520i so i can throw this b25 donk into it, doesnt look well in the garden :?

Few questions

i'am right in thinking all 525i's are m30's ? and non came with a 2.5 m20

what they like in terms or rust, better or worse than an e30?

also where do they rust as they are bound too? same as an e30? are inner arches as bad as e30's? are the sunroof trays bad, do they have jacking pads in the footwells that rot like e30s

Any particular problems that affect these?

Yep E28 525 is an M30 and they never put the M20B25 in the E28 as you say. Rust issues are much the same as an E30 to be honest, they have the jacking pads and associated issues too. You need to have a good poke around the front floor areas, inner and out sills (particularly at the rear), rear subframe mountings, front wings, hinge area of the doors, boot area as the boot seals are prone to failing and sunroof setup is very similar to the E30.

Nope - the 525i is an M30. 520i is M20.

Nope Steve is right

Don't think there was an E28 525i as such

The 525e had a 2.7 M20 donk designed/strangled for economy 8O

Also, the e28 525i is an m30, the only m20 donks were the 520i and 525e.

The eta runs motronic so may be easier on the wiring side for putting the 2.5 in.

All etas were auto in the uk but I like an auto in cruiser like this.

There was definitely a 525i with the M30, not the M20. No 2.5 M20s in the E28.

I'm sure it was sold in the UK, but I stand to be corrected.

2.5 M30 wow that must be the heaviest 2500cc's in the world !

so it was the 525E 2.7 ETA that used the M20 ?

There definitely was an E28 525i (I had one)...M30 motor.

The E28 520i had the M20...

The 525e had the 2.7 M20 eta motor..always auto in UK.

E28;
525i M30
525e M20

520i M20,with early (dizzy in front left of block) management, would make easiest swap to M20/2.5...I would expect the usual issues to get the rev counter working that are present in chromie E30.

A better swap into an E28 would be an M52....or a V8.....

Seem to remember that there are minor differences in the suspension between M20 engined E28 and M30 engined cars.

I've been toying with the idea of an M52B28 E28 for a while now - what would be the best base car? A 520i? Or one of the M30 models?

And if I was feeling really brave, would an E24 M52 be equally do-able?!

E28 525i was a M30 donk with 150bhp. Not quick but probably the smoothest engined E28.

I've owned an e28 520i, 525i and 528i. The 525i was so smooth and not a slouch either, loved it but jeeesus do they rot! As previously mentioned similar rot areas to the e30 but I found the area around the front door hinges was a problem on all of mine.
Heres the 528, excuse the small rear wheel its the spare. june 1999

Know what you're saying but if it's ok in an E30, why not in a 28? :D

All the same arguments of power, fuel efficiency etc still apply. Wonder if they'd let me join the CR24V club?!

On a serious note, I think an e28 m52 would be a quality project.

Eeek! Open armed welcomes make me a bit uncomfortable after the conv we've just had!

Yeah, I think it would be worth doing - an M52 628 would be nice too. There's a nice grey 628i auto on ebay at the moment that's got me all flustered!

Yep - a delphin grey E24 with 190 odd bhp and a manual box would be lubbly-jubbly ta! But I've got a serious soft spot for E28s too, so I thin I might have one of them first.. :)

I was pulling my pudding over this 528i that Steve had at his gaff for a bit, before coming to my senses that it would bore me stupid and could not be arsed with another project. Lovely old thing. Beardymatt has it now.

Ahhh, is that the one Beardymatt got his hands on in the end? I saw him saying he was thinking of geting rid for some other project on bmw5....hmmmmm, I'm in the mood for a 528i too.....
