Ok People, i'm planning to service the car at the weekend and do the dreaded timing belt, which i'm shitting meself about as i have never done one before but would like the satisfaction of doing it myself. Do i just need to get a new belt and tensioner or are there lots of other things required?
Also i'm gonna change the diff and gearbox oils, how many litres do each hold?... It a 325i sport 1990...
I'm trying to make a list of everything before i hit the motor factors.
Cheers in advance
Servicing

If the box is auto like mine, (mk 1 sport) and it's just a change/refill of fresh oil, should be approx 2 litres or a squeak over, to get the level up to just under the 2nd mark on the dipstick, when box is warm. Don't measure level when your new oil is cold, run a few miles first, as the oil expands when heated. Or, measure when oil is cold to begin with, making sure the level is about a third up between the two marks, and once warm, this should bring it up to spot on level. You may want to think about renewing the filter inside the box sump pan whilst you're at it, (torx head screws inside the sump), only a cheap part, Ԛ£8 quid or so from Eurocar Parts, I assume they are on the green isle. If not, you could get them to mail you one. If the box is manual, I'll leave that to the guys for your advice.
All the best

Carefull not to shear a distributor cap screw when you undo them. Paint copper grease onto the threads when you replace them.
The smaller of the two bolts at the top of the cam belt cover strips it's threads in the head fairly easily if overtightened.
After letting the spring tighten the tensioner after you've changed the belt, turn the engine over a few times and tension it again.
