HT leads - where'd you get yours.....

I've discovered some shocking ( no pun intended!!! ) quailty issues on the ones i brought

Has anyone else brought non-gen and had problems?

GSF/ECP are 'usually' original sets anyway, just ask before buying if in doubt, they should be BERU.

Last time I bought a set they came with everything needed including the cover that runs along the rocker, the rubber cover for the coil, and even the pulse sensor with the lead and connector on the end.

I did buy a set from one of the above named companys, ever since fitting them i've been chasing a random 2800-4000rpm misfire, figuring it was down to something else as was overhauling a few parts at a time

Chasing this misfire, on top of loads of parts already, ive replaced, rotor arm and cap, fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator and tested and re-set the wiper arm on the AFM, none of which cured the misfire

On a hunch i decided to swap back to my old leads, as i was removing the plug leads #5 came clean out of the rubber cover bit, followed by white powdery stuff and no evidence of any wire in the core.

I have had no misfire since

Added to the fact that none of the leads were marked and i had to sit there with a meter when i first fitted them to work out what was what i was not very happy.

I'd take them back but i bought them way back in April and no longer have the receipt

Just wandering if others have had similar problems or an islolated case?

Says they are for E30's 316/8 up to 88' but mines a 90' so havnt been sure if they'd be ok, anyone know?

Also anyone got them fitted?

Most aftermarket ignition leads are shite, NGK and Magnecor are excellent. Unfortunately NGK no longer sell leads here in the UK.

Like I said, ask at the above companies first what make they are, if BERU then get them as they are what would have been fitted from the factory and they are excellent quality.
I've just fitted some BERU lead set to my M3, and what a difference it made to the 16 year old ones that was on there!

My local engine tuner (he's been tuning rally cars and high-end road cars for 35 years) reckons the standard BMW leads on e30's are shite because they have a copper wire with a 6.5k resistor in the cap. These resistors break down regularly and give a high resistance leading to bad idling and poor fuel consumption.

On my motor you could see on the computer display that on number 3 and 5 cylinders the HT voltage was much higher than the rest and the spark duration was much shorter too, we measured the leads and found 3 & 5 well over 10M ohms as opposed to 65k ohms for the rest.

I only bought these leads 18 months ago and they are genuine Beru leads.

He replaced the faulty ones with known good leads and it ran so much better. I currently have odd make leads so will be buying Magnecor instead. They cost Ԛ£88 as opposed to Ԛ£80 from GSF and Magnecor come with a 10 year guarantee.

Was the M10 used up until '88, after which it was the M40? Don't know if the leads are the same...

Don't think they will go on the M40, it need's a pulse sensor on there.

I bought my lead's from Euro Car Part's and they are genuine for Ԛ£50. Not had any problem's as yet

I got some magencore ones from www.msport.co.uk - main because the blue cables look pretty

If anybody wants to replace theirs on the cheap I have a set of Beru (used) with the plastic square cover complete for Ԛ£10 plus postage. I cannot however guarantee them.

I was getting a awful bogging when initially pulling away from junctions etc in first, also a misfire after cruising along and then putting your foot down the car would misfire and hesitate for a bit. It also made a general improvement to the driveability, was well worth the money!

Must add, this will be the 4th set of leads I've bought from BERU, and I've never had a problem with any of them, some of the aftermarket sets I've tried were awful, even supplying one lead without the cap for you to put the old pulse sensor on!!

Nope that set doesn't have an impulse sensor, the other set listed does but costs another Ԛ£30.

The 6 pot M20 Motronic doesn't use it for the ecu apparently, my local independant reckons it just goes to the diagnostic socket. Runs perfectly without it.

Not unless you manage to undo the crimp and slip it on the lead then crimp it back up properly.

But you don't need the sensor for normal running conditions, it's only there for diagnostics apparently.
