Temp sensor?

Seen people using e30 temp sensors, where do they bolt into in the head? Bit confussed...

depends on the age of your engine/head.

The earlier ones had 3 "ports" on the side, so you can just fit the E30 temp sensor into one of them like on mine here (m20 sensor in the middle)

later heads only have 2 ports and I don't think the thread on the sensor matches the thread on the spare port which usually goes to the throttle body, so you have to get the thread on the sensor turned down by a machine shop.

(the above statement is probably about 90% accurate)

I think I had my sensor turned down to M10x1.5 to fit into a later head, I think originally the sensor are M12?

They are M14, you need it turned down to M12x1.5

I knew I had 2mm taken off but couldn't remember exactly what it was originally... although was a lucky guess when I was in the workshop as I weren't 100% sure what it needed to be turned down to

Also a quick one off subject, I have 2x main plugs the ones that would normally connect too the e30 car loom what 1 doi use?

You have the m50/52 loom wired into the top part of the e30 c101 plug that then plugs directly into the car's looms. Is that what you mean?

Basically chop the e36 plug off, chop e30's engine loom plug off, wire e36 loom into e30 plug and plug back together.

one of them will be the diagnostic port/socket, which doesn't have anything connected into the pins (other than a screw down cap)

I have 2x plugs the same on the 36 engine loom..... Confussed me a bit

Including the diagnostic socket there are 2x plugs with the triangle centre that I take it are where it plugs into the car...

In terms of rewiring the plug, when you cut the plug from the E30 loom do you leave a bit of length and solder the E36 loom wires to the E30 wires, or do you get new pins for the plug and properly crimp it?

I'm a bit confused now what's being asked

That's my loom when it came out of the e36 before I got it back from Dan... the big plug near the top of the photo is the diagnostics plug and that's left alone, the half a plug on the right side under the manifolds is removed and replaced by the E30's plug by wiring the wires with new pins on the end for a decent connection.. you can cut and crimp with no issues I'm sure but I'd have thought it'd be better to have it done right and done once?

Yeh you got the question right Green, I ordered the crimps yesterday but am just wondering if I'm going to need a special crimp tool to crimp them properly.

Wiring joins should be done by stripping the insulation from 15mm of the ends, slipping a piece of heat shrink tubing over one of the wires, twisting the ends together (with the wires in line with each other), soldering, then sliding the heat shrink over the joint and heating it to shrink it in place.

My loom has, the diagnostics port, top left on your pic... Then where the other round plug is, there is another exactly the same with only 4 wiers going too it?

Your loom came from an auto. Strip out the excess wires, and you will lose the extra plug as well.

hmmm well i know the auto plug has 4 wires cant say what it looks like but im sure thats what it is on fb lets get that pic on here im sure sum1 can confirm like dan ???

It is not a auto loom!!! I am fairly sure the other plug is for the traction control, What ever it is you dont need it!! Do it the easy way mate, get the loom off and post it to DanThe, it will save alot of pissing around
