Bought a Nakamichi cd400 off ebay brand new, cost just over £200 bought it from a seller who seems to sell loads of nak stuff, anyway it worked fine for about a week now it wont load cds properly, the sound ust flickers when playing a cd, usually its the first half of the cd more than the later, sometimes it wont even load a cd, the odd now and again some cd's are perfect and work fine and then will stop working.

this happened after a cd got stuck and the unit came up with e-mech it came out eventually on its own accord

Ive tried contacting the seller whos response was, We have sold over 70 of the units which non have had problems try a cd cleaner.

Ive tried a cd cleaner still with no luck, the seller isnt interested.

Bit of a loose end, second brand new nakamichi head unit ive had and yet again very very dissapointed.

Any ideas what i should do?

does it need a new laser ?

Would dismantling it and cleaning the lazer with a cotton but and some white spirit be worth a try?

Got a link to the Ebay ad you bought it from Alex?

I would be following up the seller still even if they arent interested. Start a case in ebay or paypal to stop him having the money atleast and then take action with it, if you arent kicking off, he'll ignore you...

Warranty:

Each and every product for sale on ebay.com by woofersetc is covered under a Nine Month Warranty, and can be returned for a period of nine months for warranty service. If you have purchased a product from us within the last nine months, and it is failing to perform as intended by its manufacturer, please email customer service. You will be issued a Return Authorization Number. Returns will not be accepted without a previously issued RA#.

Get your money back mate... 9 months warrenty. Message them saying your not happy and you want a full refund.

In their ad they dont state they wont cover the return postage so they will have to pay this as well being a business seller on ebay... If not, still worth getting a refund!

If they still aren't answering, put a claim in and go from there... There full amount of money you paid will be held by ebay/paypal and then it will go from there, explain your case that the item is faulty and you want a refund under the warrenty they offer, ebay will side with you, get it in the post via royal mail with a tracking number and include that to the details...

Dont try to fix it yourself as its new... You shouldnt have to take it apart!!!

It's all about alpine units never had anything else must have had over 20 alpines in my life and been happy with each and everyone of them and only one has ever failed on my, strangely with the same symptoms your describing on your nakawaki

I don't see the appeal of these nakashusi units granted they sound ok but look really nasty, I get the fact that a lot of people use them because they look period and fit in with the dash but if you had an old house you wouldn't use a grammar phone to listen to your music now would you?

And there are plenty of other units that match the orange colour of a BMW dash

In response to the original question if it was purchased via eBay ask for a refund and if it don't work make a claim via eBay the buyer always wins

Oh and Merry Christmas btw :D

Another helpfull post from pac!

A nakamichi's sound quality is vastly better than ANY alpine I have heard, I've had a lot and know plenty of others that have had alpines.

The looks are understated and for the better, nothing worse than having some silver flashing wart on your dash!

I'm not saying Alpine are shit, far from it, but the sq of a nak is miles better.

Get off tour high Horse this is a public forum not the house of parliment

Thing is I've noticed that the majority of people who have nakamichi's are the sort that are happy with a head unit and a few speakers and don't turn the volume up past 15 so SQ really ain't that Important to them.

And if alpines sound quality is worse than naks why do the majority of people who compete in SQ competitions use old alpine units and not nakamichi's??

Oh and for the record not all alpines light up blue and have a silver face plate my current one matches BMW dash lights perfectly and is black

Anyways not getting in to an argument on Christmas day spread them love and all that.

Nak are definentely not what they were imo. People who seem to buy their stuff, still dream of the good old days... Im sure the SQ is still very good but in their 'heyday' their sq was second to none and their stuff was proper expensive, the brand seems watered down now... £200 for a brand new Nak, not a chance in the 80's. Besides, their fortay was cassette tape decks, particularly in home stereos, and the Dragon was the Don... Still it!

For an understated quality stereo, with OEM 'grown up/sensible' type looks, Becker is where its at imo (unfortunately they stopped making ICE)...but if the odd modern one pops up on ebay, defo worth the punt.....

Some say, they dont suit a BMW, but they look a darn site better than the silver stuff from Halfords...

I took a punt oh this a couple of months back...

Those £200 CD300 Nak's are not Nak's. They are a cheaper rebadged unit of which the brand name escapes me.

You say the quality isn't as good as it used to be with Nak's but i find that with most things including Alpine, BMW's and Mercs!

This is when Alpine made good HU's!

The alpine 7998r is a cracking unit and fairly modern, and the bang up to date alpine f1 status equipment is second to none all be it vastly overpriced at well over a bag for a head unit

The only thing changed with alpine is the fact that they introduced a budget range but the high end stuff is still the dogs bollocks

Very true, most things are made to a price now...But at least BMW and MB have managed to maintain their market place (by and large) as high end luxery car makers... Wheras Nak are well and truelly off the pace now and have been for many a year and for good reason....

All depends who's selling it really I've seen a few lucky peeps pick them up for under £100, on the other end of the scale they can fetch up to about £500 give or take

I've still got that CD300. Feels very cheap.

I've got this in my car at the moment. Well built, has Aux, Ipod, USB and the sound quality is very good for the price.

BMW Japan fit Nakamichi speakers in E30's as standard! Even after twenty years my sport front cones are still going strong, if not a little buzzy. The ones in my cab however had crumbled away into dust around the edges.

And sorry to say my Alpine 9887 is the best headunit i have ever had by a long margin, and i have had a lot of em between now and my first car in 1991.

ive had a few alpine headunits in the past and have been impressed with them, never used a nak so cant really judge/compare, but cant say anything bad about alpine, they are very good units.

No, Alpine is about as good as it gets for the mainstream. I've had plenty of Alpine HU's amps, subs and speakers.

Still got a 9857R HU and KCA 420i ipod interface in the mrs car and, a PDX 4.150 amp, M605 V12 amp, a 12 type R sub, some 13cm type R two ways all waiting for a home.

Was all in the E30 but i went all OEM with the blaupunkt. Kept the 13cm type R components in there though.

The Nak CD500 was better for sound quality than the 9857R and a few other Alpine HU's i tried.

I'm really struggling to find a nice period looking HU. Most of the new stuff out there including Alpine and Blaupunkt looks like Fisher Price designed it.....

I've said it before and infact said it in this post, why do people feel the need to have period head units??

I was born in the 80's but don’t wear 80's clothes and walk round with an 80's phone

My parents live in a Victorian house but don’t use oil lamps and grammar phones.

Also surely a period "looking" head unit defeats the point, if your that anal you need a proper period head unit from said era, not one that looks a bit old FFS

Think your going over the top here tbh. Why does a period looking head unit that suits an E30 dash defeat the point? I would love someone to start manufacturing head units which actually matched interiors of cars.

It's hardly anal to want something that matches. I feel the need to have a head unit that looks at home in my interior, simple.

The way I see it, with an E30 (or any car for that matter)you want a set of wheels that suits the car, a kit that suits the car, in a colour that suits the car, and etc etc..... This carries onto the stereo.... There is nothing worse than a stereo with lights that dont match the E30's dash, silver in colour etc etc....

Iv been guilty of dodgy wheels and stereo's in the past but seem to have changed taste with age but still dont consider myself OEM anal.... Just older i guess!
