The performance figures for the new 328i are pretty impressive

Shame its a 4 pot, the Model inscriptions are kind of meaning less now

0-60 5.9 seconds 6.1 (auto)
155mph top speed

and 45mpg

All from a mass produced 16v Turbo donk

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/carreviews ... sport.html

Safe to say they have done it again with the new 3er

Good stuff though, as unfortunate as it seems, this is the way forward, smaller capacity petrol. The last 15 years has been all about improving the diesel engine, since diesel prices are higher then petrol, it's about time development is put into petrol.

Makes you wonder where would we be now had the same development been put into petrol..

Cant really fault it. £130 years tax as well. Even the 335i does a combined 35.8 MPG or 39 MPG with the 8 speed auto.

This is all great news for about 15 Years from now when these turds are £1500 :D

Still not sure I'll be breaking my rule about 4 pot BMW's though

Just hope the technology for being able to fix the fookas when they go wrong gets cheaper over that time period too

So a 2.0 4 pot is the new 328i :?

239bhp, I noticed they didnt mention the torque figure, which is probably why it needs an 8 speed box to do 60 in 6 seconds.

I expect it will appeal to the masses though with that sort of MPG, its not like joe blogs would even be interested in the engine, as long as its got a nice plastic cover

I recon the time these are cheap turds the scrap yard will be full of em and if your £1200 fuel inkection system goes tits up you go pay £20 for one from a scrappy

Hopefully diagnositc kits will appear alot cheaper over the next few years from china on ebay :D

Thats my theory anyway

No you won't, it will be coded to the car. Unless a method of coding it becomes available for buttons you will scrap your car instead.

Don't know, I was kind of joking but I can see them coding headrests soon.

Presumably coding stuff means the manufacturer gets all the big work on the car.

258lbft @ 1250 rpm!

Oh yeah!

Like all current petrol turbo BMW engines, it makes peak torque at little over idle.

How many do you think will still be on the road in 15 years?

whats the expected life of these engines?
as that kind of torque requires serious rods and bearings to cope with the force on them at idle, so your options are massive, expensive or short lived.
i would assume there isnt much margin for tuning there either.

A lot.

The first E46's are now 14 years old and most are still going. They're full of coded components.

As for diagnostics - whatever BMW concoct, there will be someone clever to get around it - just like the plug in keys on the E60, E90 etc.

Pretty much the same figures as a fiat coupe turbo from 2000......granted, they should last longer, but still.

id guess life expectency would be long and tuning potential will be huge.look how well the ford and vauxhall engines are still doing today after 25 years or so. ive also found turbo engines to be cheaper and easier to gain decent figures from than trying to get the same figures from n/a engines when done right.
like many other 2.0 turbos, a simple chip will probably give another 50+ bhp and then the limits where you want to stop.it wouldnt surprise me if this has been deliberately restriced to fit into their market so the tuning potential could be much higher.
i think in a few years this could be the engine of choice for e30 conversions. should there still be any e30's left that is. :D
