How much for insurance roughly?

Hi guys,

Here's the situation.
I had an E30 about a year ago but sold it because I couldn't afford to insure it.

I'm 20 with one years NCB, no convictions or any record, clean license since 17.
Tried getting a quote on a 318i yesterday and the cheapest quote I got was around the £7,000 mark, and I even tried 3rd driver and it was even higher.


What I want to know it, knowing that I have to be 21 to qualify for classic insurance. What sort of quote would I be looking at on a classic insurance policy when I turn 21?

You need a main car policy to have a classic policy.

I insure my 325 & M3 together for £318 a year but I have to give details of my main car.

Put you info into a classic policy quote but change the date by a year! And add another years no claims!

Also, try getting some quotes on 320i's and even 325i's, coupes, 4 doors and tourings... I find that 4 cylinder E30s are more to insure than 6's

my 318is was £215 on classic insurance fully comp with breakdown cover

Classic insurance is not the be-all-end all.

Just fish around for insurance as you probably won't get a classic policy unless you are 21+ and the car on the classic policy is not the main transport.

Never had that with any of my classic policies, although they do usually say you should have one and the car being insured is a second/weekend car... Not for everyday use.


@German whips - Move house? Or try bigger cars, like I said previously, it costs me more to insure a 318i than it does a 325i... Last time I had either, the 318i was just under £600, the 325i was just over £160... But the 2.5 was a touring and the 1.8 was coupe.

you will loose your no claims bonus as it doesn't count on classic policy.

then when you finally get on the road legally they try to get you off the road and fine you to the hilt should you make a mistake .


my family car is an 8 seater and costs £350 a year to insure,the 325i m50 318is costs £400 on modified classic policy

Im affraid you dont have a hope in making it cheap.

Your best bet is admiral, 10 month policy, value the car at 3500, fully comp with a massive excess, stored on your drive, and put your girlfriend on it (providing shes been driving 2 years, or find a girl that wont mind being on your policy)

Other than that wait till your 25, it goes down by about 30-40% when you turn 21 but youll start gitting acceptable quotes at 25 (as long as youve built up your no claims)

I'm trying to go all legal and insure a car and they try charging me £7,000....

.......whilst my retard-driver of a friend has had 5 accidents in 2 years......same age and area.....and he got a quote of £1,600 on a A3.....

WTF!!??

I'm thinking of just forgetting it all and buying a Yamaha R6....got a £600 quote fully comp!

I wish I could say I'm able to wait until then to enjoy driving.
I'm going to flight school in 2 years time so the chances of buying and properly enjoying an E30 after that may get pretty slim for me personally as I'll be extremely busy. Once I get a job I won't really be around much.

Strange i'am 20 with 3 years no claims

they insured me in my 318is with 1 year no claims when i was 18 for £1200 fully comp

I wish I was, I'm studying Aerospace engineering an university at the moment. I am going to flight school after uni to train to become an airline pilot.

Thanks to my dad, he's helping me financially to achieve my dream. Because of that, if I were to stupidly pay £4k for insurance would make it look like I don't care about the money and that would be an insult to him as he's going to pay for my flight training.

Yeah, I've always wanted to become one since I was a little, and I stuck to it and chose a degree which is related to aviation, so it helps along the way.

Yeah Magpie, that's what I've been thinking of, if I were to splash out he'd think I don't worry about how expensive it is and would think I'm taking the liberty and won't have to worry because he'll come an rescue me lol!

£90,000 is alot of money in this climate and without him and without using my loaf if i don't use my common sense it can all go terribly pear shaped and create alot of sorrow

Everywhere i tried for classic said no until i was 25 and one place 23. The only way i could go around insurance for my e30 was to have my mum as the owner and me as a named driver. She also let me use all her no claims bonus and i just pay the difference on hers every year as she has been driving for 30 plus years the difference is next to nothing. That said i am still paying 750 for my e30 at 22.

It is my second car though and i am waiting patiently for a year before i can get classic which should bring everything down hopefully.

I reckon give that a try if someone in your family is willing to do it, insurance these days is an absolute joke and i dread ever having to look for it.

I had a 'spare' policy with many years no claims, that would have eventually expired through not being used, so my broker suggested I used it too insure her.
I'm the policy owner, my daughter is the main driver, and my wife is on there as a second driver, with an extra endorsement allowing my daughter to drive other vehicles as well, TP only. I'm not actually insured to drive the car!
This allowed her to get on the road at 17 for £600/year - a sum which is still about the same, because the no claims discount was already at the maximum, and any reduction in premiums that could be expected as she got older were counteracted by the general increase in premiums.
The idea is that now, at 21, she will take the evidence of her claim free driving for four years to other insurers, and secure a policy of her own that will start her off with at least two years NCD from the start.

Does seem odd that you can only get these very high quotes. Have you tried spending a few hours on the comparison sites, changing one detail of your profile at a time, in order to try to find what the problem is. Or start with your mate's profile, check that you get a reasonable quote for him, then gradually change his profile, one thing at a time, to yours.

Comparison sites are useless for anything like this. Best to phone specialist brokers.

Comparison sites are useless for anything like this. Best to phone specialist brokers.

They are for the final quote (the one with genuine details), but they'll do for imputing several fictitious profiles to try to identify the problem.
Just never give a genuine 'phone number. 11 '0's will keep most online forms happy.

I find the specialist brokers are the best way too. The comparison sights always look good and then as soon as you ring to confirm the buggers under write you and load you up to maximum!

U must live in a high crime area. Im 18 and i got quoted 2 grand for my 320i. Try going on a parents haha

My 320i was just over a grand when I was 20, dropped 200 quid this year which was nice
