The E30 touring is not very practical the boot space wouldn't swallow a flat pack, the rear lights must've been a 'brick on the head'moment for the design team, the emergency kit side bin wasn't thought out properly, the rear doors are very small making it hard getting a child out although good in small parking spaces, safety is a concern for small children and adults but which 20+ year old car isn't and no adjustment in the drivers steering wheel to see the dials. There is a lot of good with these cars though, like the other side bin can hold a 5ltr water bottle plus a lot more, spacious rear seats and I'm not joking it could fit 3 very fat old people with room to spare, German built so everything is well built, good customisabilty
, good array of engines (no diesel though, but who wants an old perkins diesel BMW?
) and good interior designs/ options to choose from. Thats all I think that I can apply to a touring ad most of it will apply to your IS.

chambers dictionary refer to an estate as "a car with a relatively large rear luggage compartment and a rear door."
im with harry and pac on this , tourings just a badge name for snobbery value.

but going back to the OP, he's better off in a 325i touring with its looks, handling balance and power than a povvo spec 2dr 4 banger whether it has forged internals or notjohnl320 wrote:So its established then, the e30 touring is a posh estate and a shit one at that.

You must be talking adults. I reckon you could easily stack in a dozen or so dead babies without ruffling the load coverfuzzy wrote:you can only get 1 body in the boot of a touring though unless you dont mind it poking up through the material load cover.
If it ain't broke, fix it till it is
keep the iS.. get a 206 1.4hdi estate which will take you, a dead adult, several dead babies, a bike and some shovels to wherever you want, all this whilst running on fresh air alone - 65mpg combined - aside it being absolute pile of shit, it's £30 for a years road tax too

Get a Volvo 740 estate you'll be able to fit the murdered tour de France in the back along with there bikes quite a few dead babies, a number of chainsaws, gallons of 2 stroke petrol, more shovels than bodies.
And there so cheap and reliable you'll make a profit when you hand it to the scrap 500,000 miles later.

Can anyone suggest how to test if the boot lights are staying on with the boot shut?

thats a funny response although you fail to consider although he might be carrying dead bodies around he still needs to consider his image . that will take a hammering driving a french car.Barx325i wrote:keep the iS.. get a 206 1.4hdi estate which will take you, a dead adult, several dead babies, a bike and some shovels to wherever you want, all this whilst running on fresh air alone - 65mpg combined - aside it being absolute pile of shit, it's £30 for a years road tax too

I'd be sticking with a 4 pot version. Don't get me started on 6 cylinders...Morat wrote:but going back to the OP, he's better off in a 325i touring with its looks, handling balance and power than a povvo spec 2dr 4 banger whether it has forged internals or notjohnl320 wrote:So its established then, the e30 touring is a posh estate and a shit one at that.

You buy a touring for the looks, handling and aerodynamics, not the load space.

Yes, but in the case of the touring, a brick with more rounded edges.Green wrote:E30 Aerodynamics?Brianmoooore wrote:You buy a touring for the looks, handling and aerodynamics, not the load space.
Yeah, that's why the touring was so widely used in motorsport.....Brianmoooore wrote:You buy a touring for the looks, handling and aerodynamics, not the load space.

i wish i had bothered to read this earlier, i actually bought a touring for bike lugging, it serves perfectly for two downhill bikes and kit for two riders, all i have to do is pop the front wheel off which to be honest would need to be done for most cars.
(thats one balfa bb7 with boxxers and a trek session 10 with boxxers, amour, lids, food, water proofs, change of cloths and full tools/spares kit)
it takes the dmr with 24" wheels without touching anything.
best of all you can get to your riding destination happy rather than miserable as you would with anything french.
as for the load space, provided you can get it past the light a lot of stuff will fit, iv had an m60 in the boot with room to spare, most of an e30 from the scrap yard, 8 wheels, and a 5" upright fridge freezer.
(obviously not all at the same time

yes, the touring has a proper kamm back which is similar in operation to the m3 boot lid extension.Simon13 wrote:it is actually more areodynamic than a saloon. Heavier yes,
Tourings/Wagons are where its at. Having your pie and eating it, they're the best all rounders going
a big benefit would be an under tray to plate over the void around the spare wheel well, thats a major source of drag.

ahhh, took me a minute there i think that should be ' as in foot rather than inch.
i am kind of amused at the idea of a 5" fridge, might just take a coke can but alas this was a combo fridge freezer so it might just fit a choc ice and a condom box.
heres the infamous m60
