However,as this purchase is intended to be a 'cheap buy' to use about the urban environment to keep the above-mentioned sticky fingers away from my decent BMW's,I think that a smaller engined tourer may be more fit for purpose.[/quote]
I run a 325i cab and a battle wagon 316i Touring.
Both put a smile on my face for different reasons but with
the Touring i have no qualms re parking in supermarkets or
public places. My family feel more relaxed, safer in the Touring
for some strange reason.
The 318iS is the thinking man's E30, no doubt about it. It's much rarer than a 325, sounds better, handles better, more economical, more modern engine and you can't even get a 'moredoor' version, cos it was too cool for that.
And BM stopped making it because they realised it would lead to the loss of 325 sales once the intelligent customer clocked that the iS was better all round but cheaper than the 'flagship' model.
Fact
Two headblenders, couple of bags of MC Hammer, 5 litres of FFF, a 48ft bastard, a box of jumped-up custard and some soggy chimps

That's because the last proper bmw was built circa 1994!!

either that or the most sarcasm ever used in a post
I don't do sarcasm. There is simply no so called 'fail' in my posting.
Simple fact is that most of you lot got 325s without really thinking about it. "Oh, it's got the biggest engine, it must be the best. And now I have one I'll stand by that first thought regardless of the facts."
Ever bought a fake picture? The more you paid for it the more you want to believe it's real (Tinker Tailor steal I think).
You all looooooose

to say a 318is is better than a 325 is down to personal preference imo. the 325 would always be my 1st choice. I do like the IS, its a fun motor which packs a bigger punch than most people expect, but its no 325 beater. i suppose its depends on what you want in a car. IS and 25 are different breeds, but both are e30s though so its some kind of win if you own either. id own both if i had the coins

Go get the the straightest least rusty best condition e30 you can find.
Possibly best advice on here! I know for sure my next E30 will be the cleanest shell I can find, everything else can be retro fitted.
Not driven a 325 but I had a m42 in my touring (best of both worlds) and found it plenty for daily driving. Can feel a sport has a lot more power even as a passenger, pity about high tax and fuel economy.

Arg,so the only way to get the best of both worlds is DIY!
Snag here is that the bloody rug-rats will still dribble and drool...and if I've spent six months in the garage building the ultimate E30 then that will not go down very well!
Perhaps I would be better off with a disposable Japanese thing?

The ultimate e30 would 10000% not have a m42 in it, whether it is in a touring, saloon or 2 door shell.
I like pretty much all E30s, regardless of engine, bodyshell etc. I like 325s, but I just think that the iS is the best all rounder, is rarer than a 325, more modern engine and so on. I just get slightly frustrated with the 325/six pot or nothing argument.
I have had sixes and four pots. The four pots sound better. Six pots sound like sewing machines/Beetles. Why was the M3 a four pot? Cos it was much better for racing than a lazy six.

have you ever had a 325i?
when i had my sport it put a better smile on my face than the 318is

I think the six pots your basing this on must have seriously needed the tappets adjusting or had other faults like a cracked manifold etc, as the six pots sound really nice and is one of the defining things for me about e30's

Depends what you are after.. outright performance.. 325i, economy.. 318is.
The 318is is just as quick if not quicker on a twisty B road than the 325i, but on a nice sweeping road and the motorway, the 325i wins the day. It also wins the day on sound too.
For me, these days fuel efficiency is everything.. Fuel prices has risen 30% in the last couple of years and isn't letting off either.. For the loss of performance between the two, which is negligable in my opinion if you have a very good 318is, it's a no brainer (boring maybe?) 318is lol
E30 M3 Unichip Alpha N style conversions, this is the ultimate for extracting the best out of your S14 M power car.

Valid points - but only really relevant if you drive it every day - and lets face it if fuel economy is your top priority you'd buy an LPG or DERV which can kick out at least 40mpg without breaking sweat rather than having to tickle your M42 along like a nun to get over 30mpg.
As the majority of Zoners seem to use these turds as second cars for fun, fuel economy doesnt really come into it.
So what you're saying the iS is the "Sensible" option, but if you want something a bit special you'd buy the 325i.
I can live with that

same here. it's horses for courses.
i always have a four-pot Touring for a Winter hack, good economy and loads of room for spares, etc, the Sport if i want performance and the Convertible for posing/wind-in-the-hair motoring.
i have owned a few iSs and loved their combination of lively performance and economy.
