I went out in it last night, it's definatley got some muscle, sounds epic too, it's got ever such a slight stutter once up to temp, i'm going to pop over next week some time with the Autodiagnose and see if theres any fault codes, also need to turn the airbag light out too.

Must have mis heard, we have a few different diagnostic machines at work, Solus pro, Autodiagnos, Bosch, Delphi. The Autodiagnos seems to work best on older stuff, atleast that's what i've found anyway, I have never used the Auto logic one.bss325i wrote:Helmet said it was Auto logic.
Check it out, it's pretty good.

I'm in love fookin awsome car, but my modem has died so I'm with no Internet for a few days. Once it's sorted I'll get the snaps up. It needs a good wash there's moss growing on the doors!

I used to work for a small Ford garage 8 years ago and they had autodiagnose back then for non Ford cars that came through the doors. Was ok back then but haven't seen a recent version of it.powelly wrote:Must have mis heard, we have a few different diagnostic machines at work, Solus pro, Autodiagnos, Bosch, Delphi. Has the Solus got the same warranty as other snap on kit, the screen on the one at work lost some pixels and they charged us for repair, it is good though, spot on witness VW stuff I found.

My modem died on sat, so i've had no internet until today when sky popped a new one through the door
So some pictures for the pic whores. Although it gets sketchy by the end because i get carried away near the end once i think its close to start up time
I left off with the zorst off and looking at the difference between the earlier system.

Rusty?! fubared me thinks

more bodgery, now you'd think they'd fit a bolt with enough thread for it tighten up and do the job!

fixed

i just had to buff the tail pipes!
So onto the head, some may not like this route of sensibleness and long term fix. Look away now!

A thing of beauty once my old man had given it a reface ready for the big refit.

Looks familiar?!

inlets

exhaust

Valves lapped just lovely

it takes ages and is well boring innit

with that done another tedious and tricky job refitting the valves with springs and collets all together

but i got there in the end, that was then end of that evening. So the head is ready to be bolted down nearly!

routed the belt properly

exhaust studs back in

I did this to try and save me tears later on with my big hands trying to refit them in situ would be horrid

Gasket on ready for the big moment!

head lowered on

in my limited brain power i fitted a couple of the camshaft carrier caps back on to give me something to hold and lower the head back on carefully. It was heavy and as always on my own doing it.

Head bolted down. i'm not going to lie i was sh!tting myself doing this. As we know the previous t0sser who did this used the wrong head bolts which were the 15mm longer ali block bolts for M52 engines! They lied and said they changed them. But they didn't. Anyhow it torqued down fine and nothing sh!t itself. End of another evenings work. It was toooooo cold this night and frosty when i came in

I then got well carried away the next day and forgot the camera. sorry
So camshafts are in, same way they were removed with the same special tool i have. Engine is locked on the crank and the cams are too. With the lobes pointing inwards. I've got both chains on here and basically after alot of faffing and checking i'm happy its ok.
Here it was time to fit the vanos but you guessed it

i didn't take any pics. I did have to do it twice as i used the vanos tool but it didn't engage! so i had to strip the cam chain down again reset it and then second time lucky

I borrowed this tool off my friendly local dealer. Many say its not needed and the stock tensioner is fine but i think otherwise myself. I had to be quick with it as this tool fits the new 4 pot diesels and we know how sh!t they can be

So were looking good and here i think not much left to do..............

Well you know i said about bolting the exhuast manifolds and this f**king air pump thing on to save me drama? Don't forget the gaskets for it

Ready for the big start up! i managed to get about 10 litres off coolant in before hand. Oil topped and..............................huge air leak. Fired up quick though. Bascially i changed the cyclone valve for another and forgot the big rubber gasket to seal it onto the inlet. So sorted that and it fired up as it should. But it was very hesistant and on off with the power idleing rough no power under load etc but with the occasional bit when it ran as it should enough for you to boot it and hang on! So this was the end of saturday
Then it got really lumpy as we have said. Well i couldn't leave it alone as it wasn't right so tonight i fitted a spare camshaft sensor. This seemed to do the trick for 2 mins then it started running on 5 pots again! But doing the simple un plug test on the coils showed no.3 to be at fault. So i swapped that for a spare and hey presto we appear to be in business now
It still needs plugging in and haveing the fault codes cleared etc. Airbag light is on, my fault. Its bloody quick in switch tronic mode and feels very lively. In the normal auto mode its no slouch but you can feel the auto box robs it of torque. A minor thing though really. I'm going to give it a good wash next as its responded so well to treatment and i'm a happy bunny as its a going concern now.

Kind words chaps, its a nice feeling to have hopefully fixed it.
I have to say the manual bit is lingering in my mind..........5 speed, M20 flywheel with an uprated clutch. But i'll use it as is first see how that goes. I've got to work a couple of hours to finish a job off 2moro and finish some plastering next door. Then i'll wash it before it gets dark! Always friday i suppose
