normally caused by low oil when criusing at speed the oil cant drain back quick enought to sump for the oil pump to pick up and send around again.the big end runs dry you get metal to metal contact and seizes, the conrod then snaps but the piston is still going for it and the conrod attached to the still moving piston makes a bid for freedom usually through the block,to put it more simply your engine is FCUKED

this would be a good time to slip that M5 motor in 8O

A friend of my brothers, who knew a guy called Les Sivour ( offroad racer in Oz, racing nissan patrols around the bush at insanely high speeds.. Finke desert race etc) told a story of a guy who went racing, pulled back into the pits and upon being questioned as to the problem, He replied..." Mate.. It's electrical!) Looking into the engine bay, there was a Fucking big hole where one of the cylinders was.

"Electrical?"

"Yeah, Fucking piston broke off, went through the block and took out the alternator!"

I changed a V8 engine on a bus that had thrown a leg, whacked a hole on either side of the block, could see straight through !! Looked pretty good, shit job though.

Had it happen twice..

1st was on an Alfa TwinCam (Alfetta coupe) 2litre when the piston ring broke, got jammed between the dry-liner and the piston, causing a seizure..
Engine still ran on 3 cylinders, though, to get onto a side-road!

2nd was a 2.3litre V6 Cologne Ford....Had low compression on one piston that turned out to be a porous piston crown! Had it replaced (gudgeon pins are heat fitted) at a local engineering shop and they managed to put the piston on the conrod the wrong way round.
Seized after 50-60miles when the gudgeon pin fractured, parted company with the piston and exited through the block! I was on the M4 at the time and the car behind got hit by bits of metal from the engine!

Seen this a few times at work.
E46 engine - big end bearing let go, seized and well you know the rest (theres now a recall on early m3 big end bearings)
E46 330 - big hole in block, the engine just seized on the mway said the customer! (when we dropped the engine undertray, a cylinder valve fell out!)
BMW mini - the engine drank some water and went hydraulic, hole the size of your fist!
