Just to put minds at rest RE fake/replica head call it what you will. Its off a car that my dad bought with 4,800 miles on it :o the engine failed with nikasil issues on about 60k. The guides won't be shagged, the seats aren't either. Its not cracked.

Be sensible here, If you were paying the bills which head would you use?! No brainer imo, i love the fact we all care so much on the issue!

Why ring the head at all? I really dont see the point, its just gay and makes it look like your trying to con something IMO.

I think you should get mr screech to do a flow test to prove its worth, and all the doubters winkeye

He could even help it along if it needs it

Have not read the whole thread but I get the gist of it..

If I ws you I would do exactly the same thing mate, modify another head to the originals spec document the work your doing on the replacement head and keep the original head on the shelf to prove the cars worth.

Why would you risk a welded repaired head on the motor when you could have a perfect modified head?


Makes no sense to me and to be honest wouldnt make a difference to the value of the car at all. Just my opinion of course.

This is the point i have been trying to make all along.
I made it 7-8 days ago. Spending a can of beans on the replacement head is a waste of time, for now. It needs to be put on the road with stock head and Alpina camshafts, run for a few thousand miles and take the Alpina head up to Corrys to see if it can be properly repaired. Stamping the replacement head is a waste of time - how exactly can you see the head number when it's on the car? Even if you could, it's a bit 'wrong'.

Right wankstas Major progress has been made. I also have a head back to use, but its now with my dad who will be giving it a flash up first.


Whilst waiting for a head to return i've tried to get other jobs done

Like refitting the front end with the replacement A/C lines condensor and dryer and the fan. Then all the trim and front spoiler could go back on

So it looks like a car going on the road not a scrapper much to the joy of my neighbours i expect. I've also fixed the bonnet as the catch mechanisms and cable needed some TLC to get it all moving free again. One of the bonnet shocks was bent. So i've sorted all that and now you can open shut the bonnet. Makes a difference! And the bonnet shuts too.

Swapped in this headlamp as it doesn't mist up anywhere near like the one on it

fixed this earth for the coil leads. I've bought 2 new earth straps for the other coils - one was missing and i lost the other!

tinkered these studs up, BMW was £1.90 a stud! fook that. Run a tap through

The chain didn't come linked so a father with a life time of bikes soon sorted that for me. You can see which one the linked one is. Its been peened!

Cover with gaskets, one was a bit bent just to make a fairly easy job a bloody pain

All on and torqued up, i even did the crank bolt. The Bentley manual states these need to be replaced like a stretch bolt?! 320Nm is the setting. I've never heard of it before?! I'll change it if i need to?!?!?

I thought i'd clean the piston tops, i only needed to do 5! No. 4 was done for me. ho ho ho

So that left me at a stage where i'm ready to do the rest.

You wouldn't even know unless i told you! Looks easy here. Whoever desgined the centre consols and arm rest assenbly on an E36 needs shooting. What a load of sh!t and bloody awkard



Next project was retro fitting my PDC from the departed 328 to this. Not that i need them but just helps the mega spec and well why not

Nothing exciting on the rear just some hole saw action on the bumper and 1 through the rear panel. ECU sits behind the passenger wheel tub

Then connect the wires to the right colours bascially. I don't know why E36's are like this but it kind of makes it easy. But...........

This is what intially greats you

On this poxy car being facelift or whatever the reverse wires where under the steering coloumn. So i had to extent one wire over. Then i couldn't work out where to get power. Wiring diagrams say green/black. match the colours like the rest of the loom. Is there any green/black on this car? Is there fook! So i had to power the car up and get the volt meter out to find a source. These Red ones did the trick. I hope its ok. So they seem to all work fine which is nice

2003 dated hedgehog. I changed it while i was there as i bought a new one from BMW not long ago for the 328i at considerable cost. The one before that was from ECP and didn't last 18months. Mirco filter whilst i was there also

What are these for? Theres ICE everywhere on this car. Some huge 640watt amp in the side pocket in the boot. All new speak wires.

Here you go Kos. not one but 2 alpina systems! Well they're quite different?!

Well i've done some looking on the alpina ETK i have and the system closest to the car is the 3.2 system which i took off the green car.

The other one is for the 2.8 and 3.0 B3's. I thought the systems were all the same for 2.8 3.0 and 3.2s but i'm wrong.

The front halfs are totally different. Look at the bore size of the 3.2 system Its mega! And no funky X pipe like the 3.0 system


So there you have it. Time and weather permitting i'd like to think we shall have it running good or bad by the weekend!

Was looking forward to an update on this. :)

Surely the 2.8/3.0 system is a bit restrictive going into one just after the manifold then back to twin just before the cats. :?

i dont think so, it is basically an X pipe ( some will call it a Y pipe) which should according to some people be in the hottest place in the system

the location its in there will give more torque allegedly

i have a stock manifold and centre section on the 2.8 compact with a custom rear which goes into a twin 2" in and single 2.5 " out ( i wanted a stock/stealth look )

i have got a magnaflow box to put to use when i make up a centre section. its got a built in X pipe and by the looks of it i'll end up the X exactly where it is on the 3.2 alpina system

looking at the BMW etk, the 2.8 and 3.0 system you had fitted to your silver turd was based on a 325i M50 exhuast but the 3.2's system is based on a 328i m52s system

id say functional but more to balance the tail tip outputs than really do much to improve torque/hp.

those kind of 90 degree pipes tend to be used more to balance pipe flow that to modify tuned lengths and its way out of the region that i would consider to be useful.

all imo and not based on much though.

That single pipe bit will defo restrict IMO, I think this is why the scorpion on my car split open, the 3.2 needs much more exhaust flow.

The aux belt is the wrong side of the guide roller BTW

So many people get that deflection pulley wrong! Even my local dealer got it wrong on my dads 530 when he had it!

Luckily the B10 survived its 'dashectomy' even if its alarm didn't, unlike the Kosmeister :(
