That does seem a lot of money for something you need to spend £'000's on to get it into Mexico type spec.

Be nice to have a decent mexico in the garage though eh!

yes mate, i'd love one again..you are right for a bog standard 1300 gt it is a lot of money and it needs a good £4k (assuming all DIY work except respray) spending on it to make it a really nice car. BDA1600 or twin cam would be nice, i remember when nearly mint twin cams used to fetch about £6-8k...out my price range then and now but would have been loads of fun.

The 1300GT and Sports were crap. Only the AVO stuff was worth having - and are they even that great now? 86, 100 or 120 bhp - hmmm, wow.

If you wanted a seventies hero chariot, the sensible money would go on an Avenger Tiger, Chevette HS or Sunbeam Lotus.

almost all old cars seem to have a fanbase who seem to think their particular old car is special.theyre not really, it tends to be the owners that are the special ones. theyre just old cars , its just some people want to live in the rose tinted specs view of the past.

Does this apply to 20+ year old BMWs too?

20 year old BMW's - exceptions like the M3/5/6 aside - aren't 10-40 grand. That makes a lot of difference.
Paying more than E30 M3 money for an old Escort does suggest a certain lack of imagination.

That's just it though - they were cheap cars. They were cheap when they were new (even the Mexicos), they rusted to buggery and got binned.

The cost of buying one now is due to one thing, the owner trying to recoup 30 years of folding spent on rust treatment and waxoyl.

Sounds like an E type from the mid 70's, how many got pushed off an Italian hillside

Hope you don't mind the edit Andy

When new, the Mexico was £1200, as was a Maxi. A standard 2002 was £1900. So I don't quite see the point of your edit - I guess there's hidden meaning somewhere....

Nowt hidden, I try and put in an appropriate emotion thingie.
Was just pointing out that I had removed the mexico (I bet you knew the cost off the top of your head) from your statement.
What car from the 70's isn't full of rust. I just used an E type when I could have used just about any uk built car back then.

To be honest it bemuses me to what MkI's make. Its not as if its got some fancy rear axle, and that was said about it in the 1400's when cart design was still rudimentary, and its hardly got the looks to get ladies excited. Must just be a load of nostalgia going on.
And I'll admit that if I had the money I would have one and sort it all out. Then possibly wonder what I thought I was thinking.

I'm only halfway through my touring and already thinking the same thing. :o:

The Avenger is the thinking man's Escort - but Tigers are not 8 grand never mind 14!
Although they have many plus points - almost RS2000 fast and a nicer multi link coil spring rear axle, they are not worth Escort Mexico money which is what that is.

Now find a Firenza or a Magnum 1800/2300 Coupe. :D

I was given a tidy Viva Coupe (Firenza body but with the 1256 naughty lump) in 1989, and drove it straight to the breakers to claim my 40 quid. :(

Agreed on the price of that Tiger, I saw a later, and also better looking car sell for about 8k earlier this year.

Some photos of a nice Mk1 I saw at Wilton House earlier this year.

Sweet enough, but it has the usual problem of the front wing not quite fitting right at the bottom.

P reg is a very late one - production ended at Aveley in late 1974.

Mk2 production started in '75 on the N so that mk1 above must have been stuck with some dealer unregistered.

Justice served! Ive heard plenty of stories about plywood floorpans and blood spilling injuries from just washing the bloody things!
The vauxhall vivas owners club was at a classic car show I went to in the summer, all three of them! :)

A Manta A is a far superior car to all of the previously mentioned scrap, a fraction of the price and a stunning sight to behold :)
