Its very nice - but is there really a gap in the market big enough to warrant another 4 door between the 5 and 7 series range ?

Obviously a strong competitor for the current mercedes design remit to make 4 doors that look like coupes.

I like it but can't help thinking its a bit pointless.

WOW! Where did that come from?! First I've seen/heard of it! Looks stunning, hopefully they'll get rid of the pig ugly 5GT!

Agreed. A thing of true beauty.

I too was wondering where this fits in TBH. With the 5GT and the X6, it's somewhere in the middle I supose. The 5GT hasn't sold that well I don't think but this will give the Merc Quattroporte Cooop a run for it's money.

Very handsome car that. They need this to compete with the Audi A7 I guess and the Merc CLS, the latter of which is a horrid pile of scrap.

It's very rare that I instantly like a new BMW.
This, apart from the interior shown, is an instant like for me.

BMW have been in danger of 'doing a Peugeot' recently I think and completely killing the brand with hideous looking landfill :puke:

..just need to cancel the X1, X6, Gran Turismo and 1 Series now :D

Chances are the 5GT won't be replaced - it has flopped spectacularly and it was meant to get the most from the 7 Series floorpan upon which it's based. That hasn't worked out however. I was following a white one yesterday and remembered why - Christ, what a hideous thing they are. I remember seeing one of these turds driving out the Dingolfing factory whilst in the company of a BMW bod but chose not to make a rude comment.
The X6 however has been a big success. I'm fairly sure the 6 Gran Coupe is earmarked to be built. Merc have spoilt the CLS so it's an opportunity to step in.

I like that. Much prefer one over a Porsche Panamera. And agreed, I loved the CLS but the new one is dog shite.

im also slightly confused, im sure they will sell hand over fist, but i thought the point of the 6 was always that it was a 2 door sporting 5 series.

kind of feel like they will be selling this rather than an already existing 5 series model.

I know the 5GT is very ugly but I think its very underrated. It offers 7 series luxury, nice pillar less windows, a trick boot and loads of rear leg room, but its £17000 cheaper then a 7 series.

Now I'm more confused than usual.
So there is the 4 door saloon that now tries to look coupe-esk, and a 2 door coupe with 4 doors.
I suppose the marketing boys are cheaper than designers and engineers.

Also anyone know BMWs definition of Touring and Grand Tourer? Is it one has the money for hotels and the other makes do with a tent.

grand tourer is the usual meaning of the GT moniker, like GTi grand touring injection.

it had meaning when the phrase was applied to 40s and 50s stuff, but has little meaning anymore.

Was just being a bit silly, to me GT has 2 doors, big engine and plenty of room in the boot for luggage and a nice place to be whilst taking the 'Grand Tour'.

Kevin McCloud (the house building program) did a series on the grand tour.

can't imagine spending £60-£70K on modern BMW scrap, when the classic choices out there are so much better

Trust me, they don't drive 'right' at all and it feels like a tank to drive. £17'000 cheaper than an FO1 on paper but most drivers lease these cars and there are some excellent deals on the 7 - which is also not a big seller. I don't think they're selling as well as the old E65 did.

The 5GT is also more expensive than the 5 Touring which is a superior car in every way.

Pretty much feels like a 7 series now.

I agree I'd much rather have a touring then a 5GT.

i get the feeling scale creep has made the 7 series redundant.

sounds like they just need to stick the 7 series badge on the 5 and move everything down one.

the 3 becomes the 5, the 1 becomes the 3 and we are back to the sizes/market positions originality intended.
thus this 6 series becomes the sporting 7 rather than a direct competitor to the 5.

only trouble would be how to spin it to customers, its not good to admit your cars have got fat, heavy and less sporting.

Sort of, but blandness has done a lot. Compared to the E65 and the current S Class, the F01 7 is just a nothing car. It's nice enough but when you're spending 60-70 bags, you want something a bit special. The F01 hasn't the outrageous looks of the E65 or the niceness of the E38. What exactly is it?

If BMW didn't replace the F01, I wouldn't be surprised. Big tanks like that are just a bit pointless these days and ones that don't sell even more so. I see more Jag XJ's that F01's.
