Is there anything else on the car thats a bit ropey that you know of ?

Towing or trailering a £440 turd from Darlington to Sheffield to then spend hours fitting the clutch yourself won't be cost effective

I've never put a clutch in a car since I started driving - but I'm guessing it will never be one of those jobs where its "just the clutch" when you start taking it to bits you'll find the propshaft donut is fooked, the exhaust hangers/rubbers will be fooked, the gear linkage will be fooked etc etc......and by then its in bits all over the drive with your mechanic asking what you want to do.

If you've got to keep it get the cheapest clutch you can find and get a mobile mechanic in to do it on the drive.

personally I'd cash the tax in, weigh it in and get a decent chunk of your dosh back - IIRC its only got a short MOT and bodywork issues anyway - do you really want to be investing time and cash into it if you'd be binning it in a few months anyway ?

First thing i would do is try to bump start the car and check for sure the clutch has gone

Its a couple of hours work at most.

ive tried he said its too cold

which is fair enough because it is, will get it towed to a mates garage this week once i definitely know its the clutch

got 6 month mot left and 6 month tax, i have no choice because i cannot swop my insurance over to anymore cars till my renewal

If its in gear without your foot on the clutch you shouldnt be able to move it

So if i put my foot on clutch and try and move it i assume it wont move if clutch was fecked.

What so you mean that the clutch is locked solid and wont disengage when you put your foot on the pedal ?

Ok it's cold, but microwave some weetabix & get the spanners out.. 4 pot clutch work is just one step up from mechano really

unless it's in an E34 then you can stand at the side of it !

You DONT need to take the manifold off but removal of the battery and tray is advisable.

The torx retaining bolds will need to be accessed from underneath with lots of extensions and a socket, ideally with a helper guiding/ holding the socket on the bolt head.

A ramp makes this job MUCH easier.

Are you sure it's not the bellhousing or flywheel bolts that have worked loose, as the twin symptoms of high clutch biting point and starter not engaging with the flywheel suggest this.

unsure garage rang me to say, they fitted starter, and given the symptoms i gave they said it going to be flywheel/clutch so he wants me to source a flywheel for him to fit and said bring the clutch too

May be that the ring gear has slipped out of position (they are heat-shrunk onto the flywheel), or the teeth are worn.

Plenty of dual mass 1.9 flywheels all over the bay but not one single used single mass 316i one arrhhhhh

I'd get the engine/gearbox out for a look first - it may be just a case of tightening up the flywheel bolts!
