Sold my old 316i M40 to my brother in law recently and it has developed a major running problem, which i will try and explain the way he described to me!

After standing overnight,go out first thing in the morning, turn key and starts first time,go to press the throttle and it just trys to die, spluttering and coughing etc. After about 3 minutes it become drivable but not for long.
After about a mile starts to get really sluggish again making it di8fficult to drive, improves slighty the higher the revs, but sounds "flat"!Then when at a junction the revs shoot up and stay at 4000rpm which is where he turns the engine off!
Problem has been there a while but has progresively got worse!
Changed Fuel filter and AFM but still the same.

Vague description i know, but i am relaying this through him,so awkward to explain.

Any ideas chaps?
I was thinking maybe the Blue temp senser but would that give these sympoms?

Any help he would very much appreciate :D

probably the idle control valve, or possible a vacuum leek.

Find all vacuum hoses, (inlcuding the bellow from the AFM) make sure there are no holes!

Take the ICV out and give it a damm good clean with carb cleaner, need to do that with mine!

thanks mate for the advice

went over to his house earlier and did the above.
Hasnt really made any difference, maybe a little smoother tickover but main problem still there.
Also swapped ICV over for another one and again problem still the same!

Anyone else got any ideas?

firstly clean the icv with carb cleaner regardless of whether its second hand or if it was the one on there

does it tickover at all?, what about when you drive then come to a stop? does it stall?

however it sounds like a fuel problem. pump mite be on the way out if its sometimes good and sometimes not. injectors could perhaps do with a clean also

just rang him and he said,it ticks over fine, soon as you go to press the throttle it trys to splutter

doesnt stall at junctions, revs usually shoot up to about 1500rpm,but has started shooting upto 4000 recently!

ticks over at 700ish untill its driven, soon as you get to a junction and put clutch in revs drop to 700 then go upto 1500 or 4000

maybe a clutch problem then if it ticks over fine when warm as well an doesnt smoke from the exhaust

mayb e a tranny problem if not? im semi guessing here

i once htought my clutch had gone cos it did that but it turned out to be my floor mat pressing on my accelerator lol![/b]

Er its not the accelortator cable sticking/frayying is it?

Dump a whole bottle of injector cleaner (redex or something) in thte tank when its nearly empty, try and run the tank as empty as possible, then fill the tank up.

Go for a FAST drive, bout 20 miles or so. I find that "Italin tuning" helps at lot, especially if the car has been doing lots of short journeys!

flush the engine oil (maybe use a flush...if you want but at least use flushing oil) change the filet, put new oil in it.
